Gallo Nero! The obligatory shot with the famous symbol of Chianti Classico in Radda on a run this morning 🐔
Why is the rooster (‘Gallo’) the mark of Chianti Classico?
The tale dates from the Middle Ages when the republics of Siena and Florence were warring over the Chianti area.
To end the conflict they devised an innovative challenge. At the dawn call of a rooster, two knights from the opposing sides began riding from their home towns: where they met would be where the border would be drawn.
The Sienese people chose a white rooster to wake their knight at dawn, and during the days before they treated the bird to all comforts and fed him well.
The Florentines chose a black rooster, imprisoning him in an uncomfortable cage and starved him for many days.
On the day of the race, the black rooster of the Florentines, desperately hungry, began crowing before dawn. The Florentine knight thus got a head start; meanwhile the knight from Siena, whose rooster was well relaxed and happy, woke up crowing long after dawn.
So there you have it! The Gallo Nero has been the symbol of Chianti Classico since the Lega del Chianti adopted it in 1384. 🍷
