Before 1823, much of Scotland’s whisky production was illegal 🙅♀️Heavy taxes and expensive licences meant many distillers operated in secret — especially in the Highlands 👀
Then came the Excise Act of 1823.
The new law made legal distilling far more affordable, allowing distilleries to apply for official licences for just £10 plus a set duty per gallon 💰Suddenly, legitimate whisky production became viable — and the modern Scotch whisky industry was born 🎉
Our upcoming tasting celebrates this pivotal moment in whisky history with six drams from distilleries founded in the year that followed this landmark act.
Six drams. One historic year. 🥃
