Neethlingshof Gewurztraminer 2024
Chris Piper visited Neethlingshof way back in 1999, when the estate was under different ownership and very few wines really shone at the tasting. The absolute stand out was, however, the Gewurztraminer which was one of the few examples of this variety in the Cape. It is a wine that we have followed ever since and the 2024 is outstanding. Planted on the southern slopes of the estate, between 1988 and 2018, the vines are cooled by the oceanic airflow off False Bay, which helps concentrate the flavours.
Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the pale lemon colour and immediately apparent freshness is the signature tune of this lovely wine. The aromatics are litchi, ripe apples and rose petals, whilst kiwi fruit and a touch of Seville oranges dominate the palate. The 12.5% abv is definitely in the wines favour, as is its price at £17.95 per bottle.

Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands near Stellenbosch, Neethlingshof is a historic wine estate with roots reaching back to 1692. Surrounded by the Bottelary Hills and Papegaaiberg Mountain, and cooled by the breezes of nearby False Bay, the estate offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich heritage, and modern winemaking excellence.
Neethlingshof’s wine maker, the exceptionally talented Mika Engelbrecht, won the prestigious Diners Club SA Young Winemaker of the Year in 2024. Mika’s award was centred around the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, a wine that will be appearing in our selection very shortly.
