Neethlingshof Gewurztraminer 2024

Chris Piper visited Neethlingshof way back in 1999, when the estate was under different ownership and very few wines really shone at the tasting. The absolute stand out was, however, the Gewurztraminer which was one of the few examples of this variety in the Cape. It is a wine that we have followed ever since and the 2024 is outstanding. Planted on the southern slopes of the estate, between 1988 and 2018, the vines are cooled by the oceanic airflow off False Bay, which helps concentrate the flavours.
Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the pale lemon colour and immediately apparent freshness is the signature tune of this lovely wine. The aromatics are litchi, ripe apples and rose petals, whilst kiwi fruit and a touch of Seville oranges dominate the palate. The 12.5% abv is definitely in the wines favour, as is its price at £17.95 per bottle.

Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands near Stellenbosch, Neethlingshof is a historic wine estate with roots reaching back to 1692. Surrounded by the Bottelary Hills and Papegaaiberg Mountain, and cooled by the breezes of nearby False Bay, the estate offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich heritage, and modern winemaking excellence.
Neethlingshof’s wine maker, the exceptionally talented Mika Engelbrecht, won the prestigious Diners Club SA Young Winemaker of the Year in 2024. Mika’s award was centred around the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, a wine that will be appearing in our selection very shortly.

QUINTA DO CASAL MONTEIRO - ALMEIRIM, TEJO - PORTUGAL

Quinta do Casal Monteiro is located in one of the most prestigious wine growing areas in Portugal - the Tejo region. This area takes its name from the Tagus river, which flows through the vineyards and provides a complex patchwork of terroir and micro-climates.

Situated about an hour and a half's drive north-east of Lisbon, Quinta do Casal Monteiro was established in 1979 by Miguel de Jesus. The 60 hectare estate bottles limited production wines, all sourced from theiir own vineyards. The vines are located in alluvial sandy loam soils where the sub-Mediterranean temperate climate and its proximity to the river Tagus, provide cool climate-style whites and reds, with a tell-tale freshness due to the wines' natural acidity.

In 2015 Luis Santos was appointed the winemaker at Quinta do Casal Monteiro. After seven years as resident winemaker at Carregal do Sal (Quinta de Cabriz), Luis is currently in charge of both the winegrowing and winemaking, responsible for all wine products produced and bottled at the Estate.

We were delighted to join Miguel de Jesus in London this week at an extensive tasting of the wines of the Tejo region. It's always special when a supplier makes the effort to come to England and this occasion also marked Christopher Piper Wines and Casal Monteiro's tenth year of partnership.

Château de Vaux – Yannick de Vermont - A benchmark estate in Beaujolais-Villages

At the heart of Beaujolais, Château de Vaux has established itself as a benchmark estate under the direction of Yannick de Vermont, who celebrated in 2025 a decade at the helm of this family-run domaine. Today, the estate spans 14 hectares and produces around 40,000 bottles annually, with half destined for export markets.

Deeply rooted in local traditions, Yannick embodies the spirit of Beaujolais—where heritage, conviviality, and a strong sense of community are inseparable from the wines themselves.

A key milestone came in 2022 when Sandrine, his wife, joined the domaine full-time, strengthening its commercial development and driving a new phase of growth. At the same time, the estate has expanded its white wine production, now covering 1.5 hectares with two cuvées : a Burgundy and a Beaujolais-Villages Blanc.
The red wines remain the cornerstone of the domaine, crafted in a structured yet refined style that defines its signature.

Les Verseaux highlights precision and elegance, with a greater use of whole-bunch fermentation to enhance aromatic purity, fruit expression, and finesse.

Le Clos de Valentin, the estate’s flagship cuvée, offers depth and ageing potential, combining richness with balance.

La Réserve de Jacques, now aged in carefully selected barrels from coopers, reflects a move towards greater precision and quality in élevage.

With a dedicated barrel cellar now in place for both the Reserve wines and the white Burgundy, Yannick continues to refine his approach, reinforcing Château de Vaux as a leading reference in Beaujolais-Villages.

Chris Piper has been working with Yannick de Vermont for over fifteen years and since 2015 has been consultant oenologist at Château de Vaux. Chris and Yannick are not just collaborators in wine making but also close friends.

BERET NOIR NOW AVAILABLE IN BLANC!
From Gascony's Saint Mont region!

The red Beret Noir has been a longtime favourite of ours and our customers and we have now added its white partner to our collection from the outstanding Plaimont cooperative. Made from local Gascon grape varieties, it is a blend of Gros Manseng, Petit Corbu and the almost unknown Arrufiac, a varity prized for its 'gunflint' aroma (like Chablis!) and rescued from obscurity by the Plaimont wine makers.

Intriguingly aromatic with lively, fresh flavours of grapefruit, pear and peaches. The natural richness and weight of the wine is balanced with a bright, super-fresh acidity plus a hint of 'tanginess' from the minerals in the soil. The wine has a long, zesty finish on the palate.

This is a snip at £11.30 per bottle.

NEW ZEALAND'S LAWSON'S DRY HILLS ESTATE
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2025 SCORES 90/100

Again, one of our mainstream wines comes out near the top in a Decanter magazine tasting of Marlborough's iconic grape variety. We love the complexity of this classic example: "passionfruit, honeysuckle, lemon curd and red capsicum aromatics leap from the glass while the palate has concentrated citrus and tropical characters with underlying fresh, herbaceous tones. Well-balanced with lovely structure and length."
Winemakers Marcus Wright and Rebecca Wiffen have produced a exceptional wine, offering excellent value at £14.65
