Hi everyone,

I would like to clarify what happened regarding the £20 note.

Two young people brought the £20 note into the shop. Our staff checked the note using the UV machine, and it did not show the expected security features. The member of staff then double-checked the note with another employee, who also identified it as a suspected counterfeit note.

The customer was informed that the note appeared to be fake. The customer asked for the note to be returned, but our staff member explained that they were not permitted to hand a suspected counterfeit note back.

As a normal procedure, when we receive a suspected counterfeit note, we take it to the police station. The police ask us to complete the relevant form and provide details about where and when the note was received. They then provide a receipt confirming that the note has been handed over, including the amount, date and police stamp. They do not normally provide a crime reference number for this process.

This is exactly what we did with this £20 note. The note was handed over to the police, and we received the relevant receipt.

There was also a misunderstanding when the person later came into the shop and spoke to my father. My father does not speak English very well and, while trying to explain that the note had been taken to the police station, he mistakenly said that the police had collected it from the shop. I apologise for that misunderstanding.

We have no reason to keep anyone’s money. We followed our normal procedure after the note was identified as suspected counterfeit.

I have also attached a photograph of the note so that people can see it for themselves, including the serial number.

I hope this clarifies what happened and addresses any concerns.
