I will be away next week and the w**e shop will be closed from Sunday 18th to Friday 23rd October. We will be open tomorrow, and back to normal times from next Saturday.

We won't, on this occasion, be heading to coastal Suffolk for fear of being savaged by the local constituency MP for excessive Black Dogness (the Ship at Dunwich and the 'Potty Bar' in Aldeburgh amongst others, we will meet again) but will be enjoying warm b**r beside the fire, heaven forbid quite possibly surrounded by old prints depicting hunting scenes, at the Ship Inn at Porthleven, the Tinner's Arms at Zennor, the Gurnard's Head at Treen, The Old Coastguard Inn at Mousehole, the Admiral Benbow in Penzance and the Blue Anchor in Helston; other suggestions welcome!

I look forward to returning to crowds of eager customers beating at the door next Saturday, keen to get their hands on our unique and delicious stock of wonderful single estate w**es, easily the finest selection in this part of sunny Essex, and well beyond!

And I will be here at the shop tomorrow...

The tasting is to be held at The Gallery, Kelvedon Hall, Kelvedon Hatch, Brentwood, Essex CM14 5TN, by kind permission of Mrs Katie Channon. We will be showing around 30 w**es, and there will be a selection of British Farmhouse Cheeses available to sustain the weary.

I'm going to be AWOL again for a few days, a long overdue buying trip to the Rhone, top and bottom, to include the great Jean-Luc Jamet of Cote Rotie fame, here illustrated in elegantly clad bottle form. The shop will be closed on Sunday 19th and Weds 22nd, but Sophie will be holding the fort thereafter until my return to the fray on Saturday. My apologies for the short notice.

It is available from The Black Dog now, at £17.95 per bottle, or £16.95 as part of a case of 6, which may of course be mixed. Carriage charges apply to orders of less than £100, or collect from our shop at Ashlyn's Farm Shop.

Les Sorts ‘Jove’ is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, with partial whole cluster carbonic maceration under selected local yeasts to accentuate the bright primary red fruit aromas. It is at once deep and supple, with a soft, moreish freshness. It represents an ideal of pure, uncomplicated deliciousness at a relatively easy price.

The 2024 just arrived, a classic Rosé from the Coteaux d'Aix, comprising a blend of Grenache and Syrah with a short skin contact to give a lovely pale Rosé. It combines vividly fresh wild strawberry, peach and mineral aromatics, with a dry, juicily fruity palate, and a long finish. And we have something like a heatwave upon us this weekend!

I will be away and the shop at Ashlyn's will be closed between Monday 12th & Friday 23rd May. No orders will be processed after Monday.

I'll be roaming the valleys, cliffs and moors of the West Country, and will return a happy and refreshed vintner, rather than the miserable old bu**er customarily lurking grumpily behind piles of boxes at Le Chien Noir, or depicted for some reason on all these old woodcuts. Mind you, this fellow looks as though he's doing the bidding of the wretched Rachel Reeves, so he has fair reason to look a bit fed up.

My deep gratitude always to customers of The Black Dog, and my apologies for any inconvenience this very necessary interlude causes.
