This is one of the staples here at George Hughes but have you ever seen it whole?

This is a whole coley…

Great alternative to haddock with a big side of chips and tartar sauce.

Christians believe that Jesus was executed on Good Friday, sacrificing his flesh for our sins.

For centuries, Christians have been against eating meat on Good Friday, and this was a rule laid out by the Vatican.

Today, many people, whether they’re religious or not, choose to eat fish instead of meat on Good Friday. Since fish are cold-blooded, their meat is thought to be different to the meat of warm-blooded animals.

Popular Good Friday dishes include classic fish and chips, salmon traybakes, smoked haddock, cod loins and fish pie.

What do you tell them?

When your boat is tied up.
When you can’t afford to go to sea.
When the future you planned is no longer certain.

He’s 38.
Two young sons.
A mortgage.
A loan on the boat.

“And no clear way forward.
I’m 38. I don’t know how much longer I can keep this going.”

This is not just a job to him.
It’s how he supports his family.
It’s the life he chose.
It’s the life he was proud to build.

But right now — it’s slipping away.

His boat is tied up.
Not because there’s no fish.
But because he can’t afford to go to sea.

Fuel costs are crippling.
Bait prices have soared.
Every trip risks costing more than it earns.

So he stays tied up — watching the bills come in.

Mortgage.
Boat loan.
Family to provide for.

And no support to keep going.

And when one boat ties up —
it’s not just one job gone.
It’s the knock-on effect ashore too —
at least seven more livelihoods lost with it.

He’s not asking for handouts.
He’s asking for a chance to work.

A chance to provide.
A chance to stay in the industry.

Because if he walks away —
that’s another fisherman gone.
Another family lost from our coast.

And he won’t be the last.
