The landlady's birthday is in July and to celebrate she's leading a tasting she's been looking forward to in ages.
First up we'll be doing a vertical tasting of champagne method Thorn perry from Gregg's Pit. We've been collecting this for a while with doing a vertical at some point and the time has finally come. Vertical tasting is wonderful for seeing how weather, vintage, and age affects a drink.
Then we'll be tasting the same pear, from the same vintage, but from a variety of different orchards made by Ross on Wye. Horizontal tastings are about showcasing different soil types and environments on the fruit.
If you haven't had Thorn before, it makes a phenomenal, fruity drink, full of tropical fruit, gooseberry, and elderflower type notes. Some vintages we've described as Sauvignon Blanc on steroids, although it can be much softer and subtler too. It's the landlady's favourite pear, a bit of a crowd pleaser without being boring.
We've not tried most of what we're opening yet either, so it's a journey of discovery for us too, and should be a lot of fun.
