Fed up with Gin, Gin and more Gin!! Then try an ALT-ernative - that's Almond Liqueur & Tonic (ALT for short). Take one measure of Almond Liqueur from Caves de Montanha, pour over ice, add 2 measures of tonic and add a green olive plus a sprig of mint. Drink slowly until the ice melts - which could be a long time under current UK temperatures. A long cooling drink for the summer - if it arrives.

EGCDP - Every Good Cheese deserves a Port. Just how i learned my musical scales! So with a good quality Stilton goes 2007 Vintage port from Quinta da Lamelas (currently on sale on the internet at a maximum price of 168euros a bottle). Don't worry, you can find an equally good LBV for a fraction of this price from us at the Derbyshire Food & Drink Fair being held at Kedleston Hall near Derby this coming weekend, 18th - 19th May.

We never realized how many different Blue cheeses there are made in the UK, not only the five 'Stilton' cheeses from Cropwell Bishop, Long Clawson, Colston Bassett, Hartington and Tuxford & Tebbitt. So here are a few others to go with our excellent ports which were available from our stand.:-

Well you have been asking, what is quejo do sierra? 'Cheese of the mountains', to translate the name into English is a type of cheese made from sheeps milk in small creameries high up in the mountains. Identified by having a cloth wrapped around the outside of the truckle, when cut open the inside is almost, but not quite, liquid. This soft, gooey white cheese is slightly acidic, but eaten by the spoonful or as a fondue, together with ripe figs and a glass of chilled ROSE PORT really is quite delicious. And when you have finished scooping out the cheese, refill with savory meat, onions, etc zap in microwave and serve warm.

Well, we have finally got a shop outlet for those of you who need a bottle of port between shows. Our friends at 'Luso Shop' at 116 Burton Road, Derby, who carry a good range of Portuguese and Brazilian foods (including Quejo de Sierra) are adding a couple of our ports to their range. Now they hold Q Vacaria X-Dry White, Q Estanho White, AC Santa Marta Rose, AC Mesao Frio Ruby, Q Estanho 2013 LBV, Q Baldias 2008 LBV and AC Mesao Frio 10yr Tawny. They can supply anything else from our range on request and provide delivery within the east Midlands.

That's the spring shipment done, brought in early to avoid any problems generated by the children in the Westminster kindergarden. We've brought in a few cases of Extra-dry White Port from the wizardess port-maker Teresa Pinto, made in her new eyrie at Quinta de Vacaria. Some of you might remember her from her days at Quinta de Silval, where she produced,(amongst other things) a superb Dry White that was all but colourless. This new product has unfortunately been in some oak, that's what her bosses wanted, but she has promised to make some without colour once the new winery is fully operational and they don't have to rely on others to do things such as bottling. The difference is noticeable in the attached photos, starting with the label. We also have in the ultimate in Sweet White Port, the White Reserva from Quinta do Estanho. The alfa and omega of white ports, so to speak!

While we were in Oporto, just had to relive memories of my first visit in 1973, when the only means of transport was the tram - and they are still running, just as i remembered them! Even your average Oporto car driver gives them a good miss - something to do with the large steel beam across the front and back I suspect.

Well, we had to have some time off from traipsing around the port lodges, so for the benefit of some of our friends, this is a Portuguese craft-beer bar with its 8.5%abv Imperial Stout and 8% Chocolate White Stout.

Its spring in the valley, and the magnolia are in full bloom. In the vineyards the annual pruning and clearing are underway so that the young plantings can flourish, looking forward to the day when they can join their grown-ups to produce luscious, rounded red ports. The atmosphere is well described in this poster on the wall of a station on the Oporto metro-system.
