Luvians Bottle Shop

Luvians Bottle Shop An Aladdin's Cave filled with Fine Wines, Magical Whiskies, Superlative Spirits and Rousing Beers!

For over 3 decades, Luvians has been dedicated to providing the best of everything. As a specialist, independent drinks retailer, our philosophy is to be different from the crowd. We quickly realised that there was no point in being ordinary because there were others out there who were a lot better than us at it, so we had to be out-of-the-ordinary. The Bottle Shop in Cupar opened on Christmas Eve

1983 with only 2 – yes two! – kinds of Single Malt Whisky, Glenfiddich 8 year old and Glenmorangie 10 year old. We now stock over 800 single malt whiskies, including some of the very rarest, on our mighty “Great Wall of Luvians!"

We also offer a selection of the very finest wines from the Old and the New World and some equally fine spirits too, including an ever increasing range of gins and rums. So why not give our Aladdin's Cave a visit, where our knowledgeable and friendly staff will give you a tour of its secrets!

188) Drink of the Day 188 – Omnipollo Noa Pecan Mud Stout (330ml @ 11% abv)

Available in store for £9.50

A Bit Of Background – After several years, some long sought-after beers by Omnipollo brewery have finally made it back onto our shelves. Omnipollo is a Swedish brewery with a cult following, no doubt owing in part to their great graphic design (their can and bottle art looks like it could feature in a skate magazine), but even more because Omnipollo makes some very nice liquid. We’re using this rainy summer day in St Andrews as an excuse to try their “pecan mud” imperial stout, the Noa. Even as temperatures remain high, we were left very refreshed by the quality of this beer (sorry, that’s enough, I know).

Nose – Vanilla, milk chocolate, roasting nut aromas, earthy maltyness

Palate – Big and smooth! Some dark fruit – blackberries, prune – very well integrated with chocolate (now 70%) and espresso notes. Malty, nutty bitterness on the mid palate very reminiscent of toasted pecans. Earthy minerality (genuinely, this tastes like the Arizona desert smells after a monsoon), dried flowers, notes of clove. Walnut wood tannin and hints of salinity on a drying finish cut the richness and make this 11-percenter scarily moreish.

Final Thoughts – This is a seriously good beer. Try it with some pecans (as I am in the photo, I know it’s hard to tell) if you can – the pecan flavours in the stout pair perfectly with the real deal!

Drink of the Day 187 – Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum (70cl @ 46.2% abv)
Available in store for £44.99.

A Bit Of Background - We might be a day late, but we would like to wish you all a belated Happy World Rum Day! Launched in 2019 by spirits writer Paul Jackson in collaboration with bars, distilleries, writers, and brands, the celebration seeks to highlight the wonderful and diverse world of rum. We stock a broad range of Caribbean and South American Rums, spiced rums, and even the occasional single cask rum from England and Scotland. However, for today’s drink of the day, we thought we would highlight Black Tot Blended Caribbean Rum, which gives us a great opportunity to discuss Naval Rums.
After the Royal Navy captured Jamaica in 1655, the decision was made to swap the sailors daily ration from French brandy to blended rums made from molasses. This daily ration would eventually be mixed with lime juice to prevent scurvy, and by the mid-18th century was being watered down to make grog to reduce drunkenness. The itinerant nature of Royal Navy vessels and the growing trade of rum in the Caribbean meant that these blends could vary significantly in their ratios and component origins, however, the Royal Navy tended to source rums from English, later British, overseas territories. Black Tot Rum is a modern homage to this historic tradition. Although not quite ‘navy strength’ at 46.2%, the blend is made from rums sourced from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica, like the rums blended for the Royal Navy. The name Black Tot refers to Black Tot Day, the 31st July 1970 - the final day that this ration was issued to British Sailors.

Nose – Fragrant overripe bananas, fresh pears, and sweet vanilla, w underlying notes of salted caramel chocolate and roasted coffee beans.

Palate - Soft and juicy tropical and citrus fruit meet gently spicy oak.

Final Thoughts – Whilst perhaps not as rich as the rums historically enjoyed by Royal Navy sailors, the funk contributed by the Jamaican pot still, the fruit from the Barbados rum, and the weight of the Guyanan rum comes together to make a perfectly balanced spirit that’s perhaps more suited to the modern palate.

Drink of the Day 186 – Tesch “Sonne” Riesling Beerenaulese 2018 (37.5cl @ 5.5% abv)

Available in store for £21.99.

A Bit Of Background - When we mention sweet German wines to our customers, it’s not uncommon for us to be confronted by traumatic memories of Blue Nun – a semi-sweet wine that was very popular in the UK during the post-war period, but which fell out of fashion over the course of the late 80s and 90s as our tastes shifted towards dryer styles. Even if you aren’t a fan of Halbtrocken (half-dry of slightly sweet), Kabinetts (light and off dry), or Spätlese (late harvest) Rieslings, if you do like truly sweet dessert wines, there is an incredible array of options made from this noble grape that we really think you should try!

To help you in this journey, for today’s Saturday Sample, we’ve opened a bottle of ‘Sonne’ (Sun) Beerenauslese from Weingut Tesch – a family-owned winery situated in the Nahe with a history of winemaking stretching back to the 19th century. Since 1997 Weingut Tesch has received much acclaim for their dry expressions, however, during years where conditions are just right, they also produce a small amount of sweet Riesling. Beerenauslese (berry select harvest) are made from Riesling grapes that are affected by Botrytis cinerea - the same ‘noble rot’ which is integral to the production of Sauternes and sweet Tokaji. This makes the grape skins porous and allows them to be dried on the vine until they produce an Oeschsle reading of 110-128 (equivalent to 260+ g/l sugar!). The wines produced by this historic viticultural method are wonderfully rich and are characterised by notes of honeyed fruits.

Nose – Juicy honeydew melon and cantaloupe, ripe nectarines and pears, gorse

Palate - A wonderful syrupy sweetness which is balanced out by bright acidity. Honeyed orchard fruits mix with more refreshing tropicality.

Final Thoughts – You will struggle to find a Luvianista that doesn’t absolutely adore this Beerenauslese. Ava wishes we had one of famous duck pate sandwiches right now to pair it with!

Drink of the Day – Havana Club 3YO (70cl @ 40% abv)
Available in Store for £21.99

A Bit of Background – Launched in 1934 after one of the most active and destructive hurricane seasons in recorded history, Club Habana is a testament to the resilience of the Cuban rum industry and its importance for not only the vitality of the island’s people and culture, but also the world’s love of rum. It is a rum of superlatives: it is Cuba’s most popular domestically, its most produced, and its most exported. And, for those looking for a wide range of options, Havana Club produces everything from a blanco to this lovely golden hued 3YO and, for the true connoisseurs, its Maximo Extra Anejo.

Nose – Subtle, but complex, with hints of vanilla, lime, banana, ginger, and marzipan.

Palate – Smooth and gently sweet. Starts with tropical touches of coconut and banana that widens on the mid to vanilla, honey, and black pepper, finishing with some astringency and the fruitiness of ambrosia.

Final Thoughts – Few drinks say ‘fun in the sun’ more than a mojito - and today is not only another beautiful day in St Andrews, but also International Mojito Day! So, no excuses: grab yourself a bottle of Havana Club, some friends, and hit the beach.

184) Drink of the Day – Villa Wolf Wachenheimer Riesling (75cl @ 12.5% abv)
Available in store at £17.99
A Bit of Background – In case you haven’t heard, we are in the midst of 31 Days of German Wine! In celebration, we are sampling a phenomenal Riesling from Villa Wolf. Villa Wolf is an estate winery located in Wachenheim, in the Pfalz region of Germany. The vineyards therein gain the benefit of a microclimate (akin to Alsace just to the south) created by the mountain range immediately to the east. Wachenheim therefore boasts some of the most premier vines in the region. The vineyards themselves date back to 1756 and were revitalised under the ownership of Ernest Loosen, who bought the estate in 1996. The soil is rich with limestone, basalt, and sandstone, which paired with the climate and age of the vines, distinguish and elevate this vineyard’s terroir. Also uncharacteristic for many Rieslings, Villa Wolf’s Wachenheimer rests on the lees for 10 months – adding a creamy texture to the light, balanced acidity and stone fruit intrinsic to this region’s variety of Riesling. Finally, Villa Wolf recently achieved organic certification in 2022, reflecting the winery’s commitment to sustainability as well as elegant wine.
Nose – Fresh and aromatic with notes of peach, honey melon and pineapple.
Palate - Excellent acidity with some minerality and notes of lemon, stone fruits, green apples and honeydew.
Final Thoughts – This wine is crisp, dry, and refreshing. It’s also highly adaptable for food pairings and goes especially well with seafood or even spicy dishes. Of course, we also highly suggest sipping it on its own!

183) Drink of the Day – Kernel Pale Ale Azacca (50cl @ 5% abv).
Available in store for £2.65.

A Bit of Background – Founded in 2009, The Kernel Brewery was one of the first craft breweries in London, helping to inaugurate the craft beer wave that descended upon the UK in the following decade. The Kernel has always operated with a philosophy of rigorous commitment to quality and no-nonsense brewing, guaranteeing that any beer they produce will be superior in its class. This priority for quality and simplicity comes across in their unassuming aesthetic as well as their attention to freshness and seasonality for their hops (which accordingly rotate through their lineup of pales and IPAs). As such, The Kernel is consistently counted among one of the best breweries in the UK and has gained an international reputation for excellence, though the vast majority of their beer is still consumed around and about London. Despite demand, The Kernel remains a relatively small-scale producer, so it’s always worth picking up one of their beers given the opportunity.

The Kernel Pale Ale Azacca embodies everything we know and love about the brewery. The base American Pale style provides a dry, light, and crisp body which allows the chosen hop to shine. As with all their hop variations, the Azacca was picked here for its seasonal freshness. An American hop, Azacca is beloved for marrying notes of tropical citrus and hints of pine – ideal for this slightly bitter, yet flavorful style.

Nose – Light notes of pine bark, rye crust, and hints of pineapple.

Palate – Crisp, honest, marginally bitter pine, light honey, and fresh sourdough; gradually evolves into notes of grapefruit and tangerine punctuating a healthy finish.

Final Thoughts – Simply everything a pale ale should be. Wonderfully bright, refreshing, and lasting.

FRIAR JOHN COR CH. III – LINDORES DISTILLERY, FIFE

Friar John Cor returns in the third instalment of Lindores’ exceptional series. This release pays homage to its namesake, who was commissioned to make aqua vitae in 1494 by King James IV, marking the first written record of whisky.

Matured in a trio of casks (ex-Bourbon, Amontillado, and PX Sherry Butts) this expression is rich, bold, and deeply layered. Bottled at cask strength (60.2%), non-chill filtered, with no added colour.

The nose offers sweet vanilla, red apples, and dried fruits, leading to a rich palate of dark syrup, figs, spice, and chocolate, finishing with notes of chocolate fudge and cinnamon.

Available from today in Cupar and St Andrews. Come share a dram with .
