As part of our Rioja Month celebrations, this weekend we’re opening a robust and warming red to help keep the autumn chill at bay: Cantos de Valpiedra Crianza 2021.

Cantos de Valpiedra is the younger sibling of Finca Valpiedra, the only Rioja estate to feature among the prestigious Grandes Pagos de España (Great Estates of Spain). Located in Rioja Alta, within a dramatic meander of the Ebro River, the estate is renowned for its distinctive stony soils, which help shape the character of its w**es. Its name translates as “Valley of Stones”.

Made with 100% Tempranillo grapes and aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels, this Crianza offers enticing aromas of black fruit and ripe sloe, complemented by notes of vanilla, warming spice and to***co. The palate is rich and intense, with balanced acidity, a distinctive mineral character and the signature freshness of Valpiedra, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Scoring an impressive 92 points from Luis Gutiérrez of Robert Parker W**e Advocate and 93 points from Inés Salpico of Decanter, this is a Rioja well worth discovering.

Perfect alongside hearty vegetable and bean casseroles, ragus, roast lamb or pork - ideal inspiration for some comforting autumn cooking!

🍷 Free In-Store Tasting | Friday 16th & Saturday 17th October 🍷

This weekend, we’ll be opening two excellent new arrivals from Bordeaux for a free in-store tasting at JN W**e, both sourced by our retail team member Stephen during a trip to the region earlier this year.

Both w**es come from the Pestoury family, organic vignerons based in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, who have spent nearly three decades building their estate and championing more sustainable viticulture.

Bertrand and Isabelle Pestoury started in 1997 with just nine hectares of vines, gradually expanding their holdings over the years. In 2010, they began the transition to organic farming, and following the arrival of daughter Marie at the estate in 2022, the family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture continued to grow. As of 2026, all four of their sites are officially organically certified.

🍇 Symphonie du Haut-Geai 2023
A rare 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Côtes de Bordeaux, made from the family’s oldest plots, with vines reaching 65 years of age on clay-limestone and gravel soils.

Lifted aromas of cedar and violets lead into a full-bodied palate of cassis and hedgerow fruit, with finely detailed tannins and subtle notes of clove from barrel ageing. A seriously characterful Bordeaux red, it’s an excellent match for seared steak, Sunday roast and mature cheeses.

🍇 Château La Rose Bois Montet Rouge 2024
An 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc blend from vines averaging 40 years old, grown on clay, limestone and sandy soils.

At just 12% ABV, this is a more understated, deft expression of traditional Bordeaux. Medium-bodied, with herbal-tinged red and black fruit, forest floor aromas, refreshing acidity and a distinctive black tea-like finish, it’s a charmingly pastoral red that will pair beautifully with rich autumnal stews and casseroles.

Two distinctive Bordeaux reds, both offering fantastic value and well worth discovering!

Timed to coincide with Rioja W**e Month, this Saturday's tasting will begin in Spain's iconic Rioja region before exploring the incredible diversity of w**es from across the Iberian Peninsula.

We'll discover what makes Rioja so special, from traditional oak-aged classics to vibrant, modern expressions, before venturing further afield to explore Portugal's distinctive w**es and the exciting variety of styles found across both countries.

🍊 Belated National Orange W**e Day Tasting | Badenhorst Secateurs Riviera 🍊

Free In-Store Tasting | Today, 9th October, until 6pm & Tomorrow, 12pm - 5pm 🍷

October 6th was National Orange W**e Day, so we’re celebrating a little late with a brilliant and (by orange w**e standards, fairly accessible!) example from none other than Adi Badenhorst!

Badenhorst w**es need little introduction to JN W**e customers, with the Secateurs Chenin and Red Blend among the best-loved lines in our portfolio. Based in the Swartland, Adi was one of the early pioneers of this rugged and wild corner of the Western Cape, farming old bush vines on granite soils beneath the imposing Paardeberg Mountain, at the family farm of Kalmoesfontein 🍇 🌿

Pouring in-store:

👉 Badenhorst Secateurs Riviera Orange W**e 2025

A blend of predominantly Chenin Blanc, alongside the Rhône varieties Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier. Partially whole-bunch fermented spontaneously in concrete tanks, the grapes spend three weeks on their skins before the w**e ages for ten months in old casks. Bottled without fining or filtration, this is a proper low-intervention orange w**e that showcases Adi’s experimental spirit and the distinctive terroir of the Swartland.

Expect generous flavours of papaya, orange rind, ginger and rooibos, with a spicy, savoury character and plenty of texture.

🍽 Perfect with warming autumnal dishes: think pumpkin risotto, butternut squash curry or creamy Dijon chicken.

It was another fantastic evening in the JN W**e tasting room last Wednesday, as we welcomed Pikes and Chef Roy for a wonderful w**e supper club! 🍷 🍽️

We were delighted to be joined by Pete Bentley, Sales & Export Manager at Pikes, who guided us through a selection of w**es from this revered Australian producer. Best known for its benchmark Clare Valley Rieslings, Pikes also has plenty more to offer, including lesser-seen styles from the Clare as well as the Pike & Joyce range, exploring Burgundy varieties in the Adelaide Hills. Huge thanks to Pete for joining us and for his typically relaxed and entertaining presentation!

The w**es were paired with a stunning seasonal menu from Chef Roy and partner Julie, showcasing the very best of local produce. The evening featured some particularly memorable pairings:

2024 is already being regarded as one of the greatest Port vintages in living memory, with comparisons to the outstanding 2011 and legendary 1945. It is also the region’s first major Vintage Port declaration since 2017.

The Bergqvist family have owned Quinta de la Rosa since 1906, and the estate has since become one of the Douro’s most respected producers among aficionados, known for its elegant and detailed style.

The 2024 vintage benefited from balanced conditions throughout the growing season, with cool nights and warm days allowing for slow, even ripening. The resulting Port combines purity of fruit and concentration with freshness, ‘vinous’ refinement and complexity.

As Head W**emaker Jorge Moreira describes it: “one of La Rosa’s most impressive in recent years.”

Vintage Port is built for long ageing, making this an excellent w**e to lay down for the future, while La Rosa’s style means it should also show beautifully in its youth.

October means Rioja w**e month, so to kick it off we are opening the delightful Urbina Viura Blanco Crianza 2016

Bodega Urbina is a w**ery with a history of 150 years across four generations.
Situated in the North-western ridge of Rioja, Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón. W**es produced in this area have great capacity for ageing, and so can produce w**es of character and distinction.

Made with 100% Virua grapes, the w**e has a nose of stone fruits, melon and citrus with notes of jasmine, fennel and peach in the background. The palate shows apricot, melon & grapefruit. Light & refreshing with good acidity with surprising volume & density.
