Cru Bourgeois? Ever wondered what that means on a Bordeaux w**e label?
Well it’s an official quality classification for red w**es from the Medoc region representing top tier estates that were left out of the famous 1855 Classification.
Back in 1855, Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification for Bordeaux w**es that ranked Châteaux in importance from first to fifth growths. This was so accurate that the classification has only been changed twice in the last 170 years, significantly in 1973 when Château Mouton Rothschild was promoted from a second growth to a first growth.
There are only 5 w**es determined to be the best of the best,
Château Lafite Rothschild #
Château Margaux
Château Haut Brion
Château Latour
Château Mouton Rothschild

Anyway, back to Cru Bourgeois, because it’s not a classified growth, is it any good? Absolutely it is! It is strongly considered that there is an overlap in quality between classed growths and Cru Bourgeois. Cru Bourgeois also represents incredible value for money! Try one to find out!

Haut-Medoc? What’s that? Haut-Medoc is actually a region in itself in the left bank of the Garonne, just south of Margaux.

This particular w**e is a fabulously mature Château Charmail, a Château that dates back to the 16th Century and in the 1750’s their w**es were served at the court of Louis XV.

Nowadays it’s owned by a family from Bordeaux who spent years in the US, they have come home to the Medoc and are reconnecting with their French roots.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It has flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant, liquorice, to***co and coffee. Matches well with roast lamb, beef and game.
