๐ท Red, White, Rosรฉ & Sparkling โ What's the Difference?
With so many bottles to choose from, it helps to understand what's actually in your glass โ and why each style tastes the way it does.
Here's a straightforward guide to the four main wine styles.

Red wine is made from dark-skinned grapes โ and crucially, the grape skins are left in contact with the juice during fermentation. That's where the colour comes from, along with tannins, the characteristic dry, grippy sensation you might notice with a Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec.
Reds tend to be:
๐ดBolder and more structured
๐ดBest served slightly below room temperature
๐ดA natural match for red meat, aged cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes

White wine is usually made from green or yellow grapes โ though it can actually be made from dark-skinned grapes too, as long as the skins are removed early. Without skin contact, there are no tannins, giving white wine its characteristic crisp, lighter feel.
Whites tend to be:
๐ฅFresh, aromatic, and often higher in acidity
๐ฅBest served chilled
๐ฅWell-suited to fish, chicken, and lighter dishes

Rosรฉ sits between red and white โ made from dark-skinned grapes with only brief skin contact, giving that distinctive pink colour. It's not a blend of red and white (with a few exceptions, notably some sparkling rosรฉs).
Rosรฉ tends to be:
๐ธLight to medium-bodied with delicate fruit flavours
๐ธBest served well chilled
๐ธIncredibly versatile with food โ from salads to grilled fish to a charcuterie board

Sparkling wine gets its bubbles through a secondary fermentation process that traps carbon dioxide in the bottle. Champagne is the most famous example, but there's a wide world beyond it โ Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, Crรฉmant from France, and some outstanding English sparkling wines closer to home.
Sparkling wine tend to be:
โจCrisp, refreshing, and celebratory in character
โจAvailable across a wide range of sweetness levels, from Brut (dry) to Demi-Sec (sweeter)
โจA surprisingly good match for food โ particularly fried dishes, soft cheeses, and seafood.
The beauty of wine is there are no rules โ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐.
