New proposals by Homes England would reduce parking spaces on London Road threatening the viability of the Londis store and sub-post office, the plans would eliminate parking spaces outside the shop as well as at 89-91 London Road to widen the pavement at this point and I would urge residents to write in with their objections to this ill-thought out plan.

This would mean no parking spaces at this section of London Road when these are already extremely limited in surrounding roads. The shop is well used not only by local people and by passing motorists, noting the relevant parking spaces are already often full leaving irresponsible motorists parking on the zig zag lines protecting the controlled crossing.

The changes are part of laudable plans for new “mobility corridors” from the new Brookleigh development into the town centre, to improve connections for pedestrians and cyclists; noting the pavement further down the hill on London Road would benefit from widening but the proposals make no mention of this.

I am concerned at this proposal as whilst I very much support improved routes for cyclists and pedestrians this plan does not make sense given the extremely limited local parking and have written outlining my opposition.

Perversely it also contrasts with the failure of Homes England to include the parallel section of Freeks Lane, which was designated as a “green super highway” but excluded from their recent planning application to upgrade Freeks Lane north from Eastbridge Avenue (see previous post). I understand the key issue here is around ownership of that stretch of Freeks Lane but am hopeful this can be overcome.

Comments on the proposal to eliminate these parking spaces on London Road are requested by 26th March to [email protected] .

Save Londis – Protect Local Businesses

I’ve just spoken with Kazem at Londis on London Road, Burgess Hill, and it’s very disappointing to hear that the two parking spaces in front of the shop are set to be removed.

As a local business owner, I understand the frustration this will cause. If this happens, it could force Londis to close, a major loss for our community.

I will raise this matter with Highways and do everything I can to support Kazem and this vital local business.

Don’t take away parking, support local businesses!
