📣NEW GROWER ALERT: Stephen Pannell (McLaren Vale)

McLaren Vale was always a red wine region, confidently producing glossily seductive reds, with old vine Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and the increasingly fashionable Grenache its clear strengths.

Far sighted growers such as Stephen Pannell at S.C. Pannell winery believe the future lies in vine varieties that have already proved well-suited to a Mediterranean climate.

A two-time winner of the fabled Jimmy Watson trophy, the most prestigious wine award in Australia, he has also won top prize at the Alternative Varietals Wine Show three out of the last five years.

One of the key factors behind Stephen’s success is the freshness in all his wines, something he achieves by picking earlier, made possible by his adoption of better viticultural practices.

Because of this fresher ‘stamp’, he is also actively reducing oak influence in his wines by moving to larger, more neutral oak vessels.

The spring sun is shining and the bluebells are out. What a perfect day to celebrate Bluebell Vineyards’ ‘Ashdown’ range of English still wines 🌞🍇

Ideal for a special occasion, or for refreshing early summer drinking. The wines below are in stock and chilling in our fridges.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Chassalas 2020

An English still white wine crafted from 100% Chassalas grapes, the only plantings of the variety in the UK.

Aromatic composition of delicate white flowers, ripe citrus, stone fruits, lime zest, peach blossom and subtle smokiness.

Well balanced, crisp and refreshing.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Valley View 2020

An English still white wine grown from a single Chardonnay clone (clone 75) on a single plot (Valley View).

The grapes are crushed & de-stemmed before being barrel fermented in old French oak barrels and undergo partial malolactic fermentation.

The wine has a lovely creamy character with great acidity and a mild oaky finish.

Elegant and balanced the wine continues to develop fuller, deeper & rounder fruit and vanilla notes with bottle age.

✨Bluebell Vineyards, ‘Ashdown’ Ortega 2020

A rare chance to try an English still wine crafted from 100% Ortega grapes.

Not usually sold to trade we begged and pleaded until we managed to prize away a small number of bottles from the Bluebell cellar.

Half the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The other half in old French oak barrels.

The assembled wine is aged for 4 months in old French oak resulting in a bold and complex wine.

Golden in colour with bold aromas of apricot and hazelnut leading to flavours of ripe peach.

A complex wine with a rich mouth feel and oily viscosity. Subtle rubber and gun smoke aromas play a long beguiling finish 🍇🍇🍇

Spring is on its way and the bluebells are beginning to show!

Choose from the pure and delicate, Seyval Blanc or Sparkling Rosé ✨

The elegant & intriguing Meunier, made exclusively with Pinot Meunier grapes 🍇🍇🍇

The rich & toasty notes of Kevin’s Classic Cuvée MV, Champagne-like in its stature.

The full-bodied aromas & creamy texture of the winery’s flagship Barrel Aged Blanc de Blancs.

The fruity palate of ‘Ruby’ a Sussex sparkling red made from the only commercial plantings of Merlot in the UK.

A big thank you to Cathy at Bluebell Vineyards and winemaker Kevin Sutherland for being so generous with their time last week! 🍾🥂

A breakfast tasting of 10 wines, 3 stills & 7 sparklers ranging from pure & delicate, to fragrant & aromatic, to bold & complex!

The wines were showing sensationally well so much so we began to wonder was it a fruit day? 🍇🍇🍇

The biodynamic calendar specified a root day but the wines were singing to a chorus of blaring trumpets!!! ✨
