I was serving a lady in the shop, she paid for her shopping and then put the change in the charity box ‘Guide dogs for the blind’. I thanked her and she told me a story. Her and her husband were looking for a dog to keep them company, they found an animal charity that offered homes for ex working dogs from which they bough a golden retriever. The dog was very friendly, when they took it to their local pub, (Not a pub around here) the dog would sniff some locals and sit down beside them and bark with his tail wagging, then he would look back at the owner for praise. The owner couldn’t figure it out and thought it was something to do with the dog’s previous working life. She contacted the dog charity and was told the dog was a customs drug sniffer dog!
As you can imagine, we laughed and tried to imagine what was in some of the pockets of those locals who frequented the pub. Later that day the lady returned with the dog to demonstrate how it sniffed out substances, fortunately the dog showed no interest in me!

In the mid-eighties, I was in the shop, it was just before dinner when a sleek sports car pulled up outside, a smart dressed woman was driving and a tall, well-dressed man sat beside her. The man was Sir Terry Waite, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Special Envoy. They walked into the shop.
He asked if I could make him a sandwich. I said, ‘Will cheese and onion be ok? I have some Bishop’s Reserve Cheddar Cheese!’

He chuckled to himself, I finished making the sandwiches and Sir Terry and his secretary went over to the Village Green and ate them while sitting on the bench.
Some time after Sir Terry Waite was kidnapped and held captive in Lebanon for several years.

It was a bright, quiet Sunday morning in early June, back around 1994. The kind of morning where you expect nothing more exciting than the smell of fresh ink on the Sunday papers.
The shop door swung open, and in staggered Arthur Hazlerigg from Noseley Hall. Now, Arthur was usually a man of great composure, but that morning he was shaking like a leaf! He looked absolutely terrified.
I looked at him and asked, "Arthur, what on earth is the matter with you?"
He was trembling so hard he could barely speak, while the chap he was with was standing there just laughing. Arthur finally managed to get the words out: "He’s just driven me down from Noseley in his sports car... I can’t go through that again! I was holding on for dear life!"
He told me he’d never been so scared in a car in his life.
As it turns out, the "chap" who had given him the ride of a lifetime was none other than Mika Häkkinen Formula 1 Champion, It was such a surreal moment - meeting such a champion and right here in our shop, tucked away from the hustle, bustle, and turmoil of the racing world and the media.
Just goes to show, you never know who might pop in for their Sunday Times! 🏎️
