Village shopping is often regarded as lost forever. but curiously in Baslow it still thrives. Find out why. NOTE.

If you refer to the map to locate our shop - the map is wrong but cannot be altered. The shop is situated at the junction of Over Lane (not Over Road) with School Lane. This profile will show you all about Baslow village shop and Post Office. The shop trades under the SPAR brand but is entirely owned and run by the Upton family - husband and wife Christine & David and their son David and daughter Emily. Other staff* work alongside the family who have owned the business since 2003.

2020 proved to be a very difficult year for us as a business. In 2003 when we took the business on, it was the only shop serving quite a wide area but by 2020, with increased competition, trade had really slumped to the point where by early 2020 we realised we could not go on any longer and with much regret, we announced to the community that we would be selling-up. Our wonderful staff were let go, and as a family of four, we proposed to keep the shop and Post Office going until such time as the business/site sold - we assumed by the summer. Then something totally unexpected happened and Coronavirus arrived in the UK. We were then asked if we could provide a delivery service to all the residents who would soon be self isolating? How could we with just four left to run the business? The solution was very swiftly found in a small army of local volunteers who came forward and began taking orders out on our behalf. We went from calling it a day to working flat-out virtually overnight. Almost exactly 12 months later (late Jan 2021), things are much calmer now. We deliver still to several customers, but can manage to do so ourselves and do so in our own distinctive delivery van. We will however be eternally grateful to all those who volunteered to help when the need arose and to all those who have continued to use the shop and thus make it viable for us to continue for the foreseeable future. Here is some of the shop's history:
The shop business started life in the late 1930s in the kitchen of the cottage beside the shop. That business grew to a point where it became necessary to take over the front room in which a counter was built just inside the front door. Any more than three customers, and others had to queue on the garden path. As the business continued to grow, it was eventually decided a purpose-built shop was the answer and so in the late 1950s the cottage garden was cleared and an outbuilding demolished to make room for the new building. This went up in the very early 1960s but was almost immediately recognised as being too small and so 2/3 years later the building was doubled in size to what we have today. The shop served the community well and survived while others - curiously situated on the main road through the village passed away. By 2002 the elderly lady owner knew it was time to step down and so the business was put on the market at which point Christine and David showed an interest and eventually went on to purchase the business and site which includes the cottage in which the business was first started. Today this cottage is a very popular two bedroomed holiday cottage.

Today is rather poigniant for us. On the one hand we are in the process of finding someone who can take the batton from us and maintain your village shop and PO, while today marks the day we reopened the shop, having taken it over from Mrs. Hawley - 23 years ago. We anticipate being here over Christmas, so the next tree we put up will be our 24th.

Christine always reminds that on the day before we opened - everything was ready shop-wise. That evening, she and Emily set off for home, but at Calver Crossroads calamity struck when the clutch on her car failed. Suddenly she had all sorts of problems, not least, how would she get back to Baslow? What she regards as two angels, pushed the car onto the garage forecourt and I came and collected them. What happened afterwards, we can't remember, but the shop opened promptly at 8am and has somehow, opened daily ever since.

The 1941 dated photo shows where the shop business first started - in the cottage beside the shop. To construct the shop an outbuilding was demolished and the shop was built in the garden.
The colour photo shows the ladies working at the shop not long before it closed. One local lady might recognise her mum?
The photo with the two hikers was taken in 1975 for 'This England' magazine and an article on Baslow. The other similar photo was taken by Phil Upton in 2004.
The photo of the lorry delivering potatoes(?), was taken some time in the 1960s and shows the owner, Lawrence Hawley chatting with the delivery driver. A dark coloured van is parked in front of the shop. This was only possible until the Hawleys doubled the size of the shop - the work being completed in 1970.

We've been asked if we would like to make this book available. It has been written by an American pastor who came over here to walk the Peak Wesley Way pilgrim route.
We had no idea he had been in the shop and were very touched when we were shown these couple of pages which make mention of us.
We can only think our American-made coffee machine made him feel very much at home!

Plenty of compliments coming in since our supplier, Middleton's Dairy changed their own supplier to Dales Dairy.

One of our forward looking customers has been in asking if we will be making 3 Day Survival Packs available? If you have no idea what this is about, this morning our own government is encouraging everyone to stock up so we can last a 3 day emergency. What that emergency is, is not clearly defined. Presumably they have yet to decide.
Whatever it is, let's assume a worse case senario and we have no power. This will limit what you can eat over the 3 days, so we suggest the following, starting with biscuits. From experience, no crisis can be handled without a good supply of biscuits. Tea with them would be good but remember we have no power and most likely no gas as well.

Other suggested supplies include:
Nail sissors, in case your nails need trimming over the duration.
Cake candles - you might have a birthday at the time, plus we have no ordinary candles.
Box of matches - suggest 2 as it takes a lot of matches to read something in the dark.
Bags of sweets, any will do.
B**r, w**e or spirits - you decide how much.
Biros and paper, in case you fancy writing about your experience.
Cake. Get plenty.
Bottled water.
Box of chocs to celebrate coming through the emergency.

The above should help you make it through and oddly enough, we have everything still in stock.

Some suggest cash, but what would you spend it on and if everyone decides to grab what they can, we could end up with a run on the banks and crashing the ecconomy. Maybe this is the emergency we need to be ready for?

Change of milk.

In recent days customers have noticed how our milk has changed to Dales Dairy milk and have ask why we have made the change. In fact, we haven't but our supplier for many years - Middleton's Dairy of Hope Valley are the ones who have made the change. All indications are that the change is very well received and several of our customers are reporting that the milk seems thicker and tastes creamier.

Dales Dairy of Grassington is a very well established and respected generational family concern - something that particularly attracted Middleton's. You will also find the plastic bottles are sturdier and less prone to leakage in transit. The caps are all colour coded - blue, full cream, green, semi skimmed and red, skimmed milk.

The milk in glass bottles is also supplied by Dales Dairy. The bottles do not carry supplier branding because the bottles are returnable and there is a tendency for them to be left anywhere, finding their way into the hands of different suppliers.

The cap colour coding is different - silver, full cream, red check, semi skimmed, blue check, skimmed milk. Middleton's are looking into getting gold top and can also supply oat milk and Kefir.

What we also have to report is that from tomorrow (Saturday) there will be an inevitable price increase. This is not due to the move to Dales Dairy. Middleton's have been holding back the price increase for some time but have reached a point where they can no longer. With everything else going up it's hardly suprising.

Whilst on the subject of Middleton's, they are also suppliers of some of our range of dairy products - creams and yoghurts in particular.
