INT. FAMILY GROUP CHAT — THANKSGIVING MORNING
ME: "Derek, it's been 14 months. The $18,000. When?"
DEREK: "What $18,000?"
ME: "The loan. For your food truck deposit."
DEREK: "That was a GIFT, sis. You said 'family helps family.'"
Fourteen months ago I emptied my savings because his landlord gave him 48 hours.
The truck is running now. He just hired two staff. Business is good — for him.
MOM (typing...): "Your brother is building something. Don't be bitter."
Bitter. I kept every text. All of them. "LOAN. Pay you back by Christmas. — D"
So at 9 a.m., before the turkey even went in, I dropped all 47 screenshots into the family chat.
Then I attached the small-claims filing. Court date: December 12.
Derek called in 90 seconds. Suddenly he remembered everything. The Venmo hit my phone before dessert: $18,000.
Funny how memory comes back when a judge gets involved.
Would you have sued your own brother — or eaten the loss to keep the peace?
