Agave by Montiel is a female owned company specialized in agave spirits from Mexico. We have equal roots in Oaxaca, Mexico and Aarhus, Denmark, and we are passionate about sharing the culture and craft behind the spirits with the rest of the world! Our main focus is destilados, mezcales, and tequilas - most of the bottles we stock, we import directly to Europe. We work with predominantly family ow

ned distilleries, who are engaged in their local communities, and who work in respect of not only nature but both the natural and human resources used in the production process. DID YOU KNOW that mezcal is not only produced in Oaxaca? All over Mexico the term has been used historically about distilled agave spirits. This is also true in Puebla - the home state of Zinacantan Murzielaga Mezcal.

MOVIE NIGHT & MEXICAN CORN SPIRITS

I will share the documentary about native corn 🌽 from Oaxaca, a great movie that talks about the importance of how the food sovereignty is grounded in traditional farming methods, soil conservation, farmer’s rights to their own seeds, and community seed banks. These principles are the root of cultural diversity in indigenous communities.

After the movie, I will announce and share the release of our brand new products from - whiskey from Oaxaca made with native corn.
I will guide the tasting of the corn new make, the corn whiskey, the Selection Barbieri (limited edition bottles of whiskey with corn, wheat and rye)and last but not least, the very first Rye Whiskey from Mexico! 🇲🇽

Located in the heart of Oaxaca city, the goal of MEZCALOTECA is to educate consumers about traditional mezcal and help preserve traditional production methods.

DO YOU KNOW the tahona? This large heavy stone wheel is used by some traditional mezcal producers to crush the cooked agaves before fermentation. The wheel is most often pulled by animals like a mule, horse or oxen.

SPEAKING OF BECUELA vs Tepextate and REAL MINERO, we are proud to offer this micro batch production from the family! Produced in April 2022 with their signature clay pot distillation this batch was only 25 liters. It was rested 1 year and 4 months in glass before bottling. This does not come around often.

The front figures today are Graciela Angeles Carreño and brother Edgar Angeles, while in reality the four siblings all have a crucial role in the everyday operations of preserving their family heritage and sharing it with the world.

DID YOU KNOW that the same agave can have different local common names?
The agave marmorata is most commonly known as Tepextate, Pitzomel or Pichumel, but in Santa Catarina Minas in Oaxaca it is historically referred to as Becuela.
