AGAVE by Montiel

AGAVE by Montiel We support the families and communities that produce traditional agave spirits in Mexico

Agave by Montiel is a female owned company specialized in agave spirits from Mexico. We have equal roots in Oaxaca, Mexico and Aarhus, Denmark, and we are passionate about sharing the culture and craft behind the spirits with the rest of the world! Our main focus is destilados, mezcales, and tequilas - most of the bottles we stock, we import directly to Europe. We work with predominantly family ow

ned distilleries, who are engaged in their local communities, and who work in respect of not only nature but both the natural and human resources used in the production process. We are proud to be not only a female owned but also LGTB+ owned and run business. We are passionate, we are here to share, we are Rosa & Gry and we are Agave by Montiel.

Today in Oaxaca, Mexico, our dear friend Graciela Angeles from is celebrating the launch of her book, “Mexcalli: The World of Agave Distillates in Mexico.” This remarkable achievement by Graciela is a priceless contribution to the world, especially as agave spirits gain popularity and consumers seek authentic information.
was born and raised in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, a region known for some of the finest mezcales from the Central Valley of Oaxaca, and her family continues to produce mezcal of the same quality that has been cherished for generations.
By sharing her life’s work and knowledge through this book with all of us, she is filling an information gap and will expand the understanding of Mexican agave spirits.

A dedicated section of the book features cocktail recipes that highlight Mezcal. In this context, Graciela requested , co-owner of to contribute a signature cocktail recipe as a tribute for the book.

Mia crafted the 🌊”Divided by the Sea,”
Representing northern Europe using sea buckthorn and southern Europe using a combination of Italian Amaro and a herbal and nutty cordial made on avocado leaves. And finally Mezcal Espadín from Real Minero to elegantly tie all the components together.🌎
The cocktail is now on the menu at Gedulgt for limited period of time. You MUST taste it!

In a heartfelt moment today we raised our glasses with Mia, enjoying this special cocktail, in honor of Graciela and celebrating her book.

Salud! 🥂

For master distiller Fabiola Torres Monfil (Faby) and her family, the making of Pechuga mezcal is a moment of celebration, a culmination of the production season. This distillate is a token of gratitude to nature for providing the essential agaves, water and firewood every year. On May 3rd, Santa Cruz Day, Zinacantan opens its doors to the community for a party filled with food, mezcal, and music. A celebration that roots back over 300 years, even before agave distillates became trendy. Annually, Zinacantan distills 80 liters of Pechuga, a double distillate made with Maguey Papalometl (Agave potatorum). This mezcal is distilled with a wild and organic turkey smothered in mole poblano, prepared from a secret recipe by Faby’s mother. The result is an exquisite 48 AVB distillate that truly captures the wild and adventurous spirit of this community.

A little piece of the 60 Minutes interview with Graciela Angeles Carreño from

“Mezcal producers preserve traditional methods as demand for liquor grows / 60 Minutes”

“The Carreño family distills in clay pots. eleven-thousand liters of mezcal a year, some 8,000 bottles. Many go for upwards of a hundred dollars.
making artisanal mezcal is part science, part intuition. and it comes with a funk…which we saw and smelled inside carreño’s fermentation room.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño (in Spanish/English translation): Right now it’s not too fermented, you can put your mouth here and try it.
Cecilia Vega: Very bitter.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño (in Spanish/English translation): Yes, and you can taste the alcohol.
Cecilia Vega: It tastes like beer.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño: Yeah.
Carreño showed us how she knows when it’s ready for the next step.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño (in Spanish/English translation): If I put my ear to it, listen. It’s like a stomach.
Cecilia Vega: It is like a stomach. Oh, wow..
Cecilia Vega: How much time left for this?
Graciela Ángeles Carreño (in Spanish/English translation): I think maybe another four days.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño: (in Spanish) This is where the flavors are produced.
Cecilia Vega: This is where the flavor comes.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño: (in Spanish) This is like the magic part.
Cecilia Vega: This is your magic.
Graciela Ángeles Carreño (in Spanish): Yes.”
