You can find Mezcales from Real Minero Mezcal Cuish Mezcaloteca and Zinacantan.MurZielaga as well as Native corn Wh***ey from Maiz Nation Wh***ey between glasses and Oaxaca baskets 🔥🤩 And at the museum’s cafe, the chef made a special delicious menu highlighting the flavors of Mexico and paring the dish with Mezcal is a MUST! 😍😋. About the film: 🎥
The film tells the story of native corn told by the indigenous farmers, artisans, and cooks in Mexico whose ancestors shepherded the ever-evolving seeds from the dawn of agriculture into the 21st Century – a story of collective labor spanning more than 350 generations.
Their voices are joined by community leaders, scientists, chefs, and others whose knowledge and activism stand not only in defense of food sovereignty and the genetic integrity, diversity, and community ownership of native seeds, but in defense of a durable cultural legacy and a way of life.

“A little-known episode in the history of traditional mezcal was the harassment of producers by tax authorities in the 1950s and 60s. To survive this harassment, the master mezcal makers had to develop clandestine resistance strategies, such as…

Mobile and hidden palenques (distilleries): hey moved the distillation areas deep in the mountains, inside caves, ravines, or other very inaccessible areas.

Night distillation: They baked and distilled only at night to prevent the smoke from the wood from being visible from afar.

Secret sales: The mezcal was transported hidden in clay pots under loads of firewood, corn, or alfalfa, and sold by word of mouth only to extremely trusted buyers. They moved their production along trails and maintained warning networks to avoid raids.”

Manuel Hernandez is a mezcal producer in Oaxaca and part of Mezcal del Amigo, a family business founded by his father-in-law, a fourth-generation mezcal producer. His work focuses both on production and on sharing the culture and tradition of mezcal through tastings, experiences, and collaborations that bring people closer to the origin and craftsmanship behind each distillate. We are very excited to announce this special screening and panel discussion of the documentary “Los Guardianes del Maíz/The Keepers of Corn”, featuring insights from producers Jonathan Barbieri and Yira Vallejo.

ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY:
Indigenous farmers, artisans and cooks narrate the story—in Spanish and their native languages, with english subtitles—of the origins of native corn and how their ancestors shepherded these ever-evolving seeds from the dawn of agriculture to the 21st century, a collective labor spanning over 350 generations. Their voices are joined by community leaders, scientists, chefs and others who stand in defense of food sovereignty, genetic integrity, diversity and community ownership of native seeds. Together, they uphold a durable cultural legacy and a way of life. Vasquez, Barbieri and Vallejo began filming the documentary, Los Guardianes del Maíz/The Keepers of Corn, in 2017. The film showcases the efforts of Indigenous farmers in Oaxaca to conserve native maize in the face of an uncertain future.
