The German wine auction based in Trier has a long history. Since 1908, wine merchants and importers from all over the world are gathering once a year in Trier to take a chance on some of the most prestigious classic wines that Germany has to offer.

Traditionally, the top producers, especially from Mosel, Ruwer and Saar, would send their best barrels to the auction, that would usually fetch many times the price of other wines from the same grower.

As we rarely get to taste these wines ourselves, we are all the more excited to share them with you tomorrow. At our bar, you will have the opportunity to sample “Versteigerungsweine” and other mature rarities for symbolic prices.

They will include bottles from the likes of Eva Fricke, Peter Jakob Kühn, Schätzel, Dr. Wwe. Thanisch, Maximin Grünhaus, and Egon Müller.

If you haven’t got a ticket yet, you can catch one of the last ones via the link in our bio. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!🍷

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #7

Maximin Grünhaus is one of the leading wineries at the Ruwer which belongs to the overall region of Mosel. Run by the family von Schubert since 1882, the history of Maximin Grünhaus goes back to the year 966.

Grünhaus is one of the few wineries in the world privileged to own solely monopol vineyards: Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg, all located on the same picturesque hill.

Abtsberg is the warmest and most renowned, covering 14 hectares where the vines grow in blue Devonian slate, at a steep gradient of 75 degrees. All of the vineyards produce wines of great longevity. While Herrenberg tends to yield a more generous and approachable style, Abtsberg stands for a maximum of expressiveness, particularly in its Riesling but also its Pinot Noir.

In the cellar, Grünhaus ferments spontaneously and vinifies most of their wines in traditional Mosel fudre barrels (1000l) which are being used for decades. These are made of oak that they plant themselves in the Grünhaus forest, where these trees take up to 200 years to grow.

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #6

Located in Bernkastel-Kues and with a history spanning 12 generations, Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch produces Mosel Riesling from first-class terroirs in a traditional style.

Led by Sofia Thanisch and her daughter Christina, the winery has a long history of female owner- and leadership in this male-dominated industry.

Thanisch oversees 9 hectares of steep, slate-soiled vineyards, solely planted with Riesling. Their most important ones are all located in the famous town Bernkastel-Kues, namely Bernkasteler Graben, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Bernkasteler Doctor.

While all vineyards produce wines with highly distinct character, it is the Bernkasteler Doctor for which the estate is most famous. Recognized as one of the most prestigious vineyards in Germany, the Thanisch family has been cultivating their parcel for 200 years. Its 60-year-old and mostly ungrafted vines produce the estate’s finest sweet wines, as well as the dry Bernkasteler Doctor GG.

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #5

As one of the oldest wineries in the world, Staffelter Hof combines centuries of tradition with a modern approach to winemaking. While Jan Matthias Klein and his team started out with a classic Mosel style, natural wines have now become a project close to the winery’s heart.

Staffelter Hof oversees 9 hectares of steep, slate-soiled vineyards, predominantly planted with Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Müller-Thurgau. Practicing organic viticulture, Staffelter Hof is using cover crops, composts, and natural preparations to promote soil health and biodiversity.

The estate produces two styles of wine in one cellar. In addition to the classic line, Jan makes natural wines that offer a new interpretation of his terroir, including both PetNats and still wines. All of them offer generous fruit, a fine salinity, and an abundance of freshness, making them approachable and juicy while maintaining just enough seriousness.

Are you curious about trying Staffelter Hof’s wines and those from our seven other talented growers? If the answer’s yes, you can book your ticket for our German Weinfest and winemakers dinner with all attending growers (both on 5th April) via the link in our bio! 🍷

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #4

Since taking over the family estate in 2015, Vincent Eymann has elevated it to new heights, focusing on traditional method sparkling wines, Riesling and Pinot Noir at the Weinstraße in the region of Pfalz.

The estate has a long history of working with great respect to the vineyard. Rooted in the belief that terroir-driven wines can only be made from healthy soils and plants, the family started working organic already in the 1980s and has been certified biodynamic since 2006. The family inherits vineyards with various soil types such as calcareous loess and sandstone, including some hectars of old ungrafted vines.

Vincent produces wines in a refined classic style. They marry generous fruit and spicyness, balanced by freshness and acidity. Both his tradtional method sparkling wines as well as the Pinot Noirs have undergone a tremendous evolution in the past years, showing that these wines are capable of holding their own amongst their well-established peers.

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #3

Kai Schätzel and Jule Eichblatt have revitalised the family estate with a modern approach and an emphasis on low-intervention winemaking, gaining recognition as a leading figure in the region.

Practicing biodynamic viticulture with trees and sheep in the rows, the steep Grand Cru vineyards in Nierstein (Ölberg, Hipping, Pettenthal) with their Rotliegend („red slate“) soils provide a unique terroir for the up to 100 year old vines.

Inspired by techniques from Jura, Champagne and Jerez, Schätzel produce wines in a distinctive style with remarkable balance. Despite their low alcohol and lighter bodies, all of their wines carry a great intensity. They marry salty, savoury flavours with piercingly pure fruit and deliver a weightless intensity from first-class terroirs through careful, precise winemaking.

You are curious to try these wines and meet 7 other talented German growers? You can book your ticket for the German Weinfest or the winemaker’s dinner (both on 5th April) via the link in our bio 🍷

German Weinfest #1 • Producer #2

Having been rooted in the tradition of winemaking for 230 years, the family-owned winery Peter Jakob Kühn is one of the leading producers in the Rheingau.

The Kühn family have been applying biodynamics already since 2004, working with great respect to all living beings in the vineyards - the soils of which are composed of loess, quartzite and marl.

Peter Jakob Kühn stands for a refined and precise style of classic Rheingau Riesling with a remarkable balance between generous fruit and intense salinity. Since their son Peter Bernhard took over the cellar in 2013, the wines have gained even more clarity and finesse.

While the village wines already offer a lot of value, the UNIKAT wines Landgeflecht and Schlehdorn, made from lieux-dits from within two Grosse Lage vineyards, represent the very top of German Riesling.

Industry friends!

Join Alexander in the basement on 29th April at 11:00 for a presentation and comparative tasting of the now defunct Domaine des Varoilles and the more recently established Domaine du Couvent.

Domaine du Couvent was created in 2020, as Philippe Cheron merged the historical Domaine des Varoilles holdings with those of his own Domaine Misset-Cheron. In doing so, the domaine became the sole proprietor of various vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, some of which date back to the 12th century and afford them the right to mention “Monopole” on the labels.

Philippe and his son Paul represent the 3rd and 4th generation, and they are practicing organic viticulture (albeit uncertified). In the cellar, they opt for a traditional but hands off approach, with very limited use of sulphur, usually added only prior to bottling. The father-son duo have also started experimenting with varying percentages of whole cluster fermentation on different cuvées and with more gentle extraction, the estate has seen a departure from the more robust and long-lived wines of Domaine des Varoilles.

We will taste the wines of both domaines through vintages 2019 (Varoilles) and 2020 (Couvent) to explore the variation of vintage and evolving style in the cellar.

We look forward to seeing you there!
