Broadway Beer Wine & Spirits

Broadway Beer Wine & Spirits Locally owned boutique liquor store in Kitsilano, Vancouver. Curated craft beer, BC wines, and premium spirits you won’t find at government stores.

Delivery available. Serving the neighbourhood since 1986. Our wines are from all around the world (and all around the province) but our heritage is pure Kitsilano—family-owned and community-minded. We were one of the first private wine stores in B.C. when we started with a limited inventory in a modest space back in 1986, and we're proud to say we've grown up in the neighborhood. At the Broadway I

nternational Wine Shop, you'll find something for everyone and every budget. You'll find exotic specialty wines. You'll find innovative releases from boutique producers. You'll find the right-priced bottle for that backyard barbeque. You'll find new discoveries at our weekend tastings. One thing you won't find, though, is an attitude. Because to us, good wine is not about snobbery—it's about sharing a passion for all the good things in life that are worth raising a glass to.

June Feature (and what we’re sipping): Rigour & Whimsy “Maybe it’s Just an Illusion” Brut Nature 2022, Okanagan Falls, BC! 🇨🇦
Jody Wright of Rigour & Whimsy, stopped by the shop recently and walked us through her wines. They are truly delicious. This one is a Brut Nature sparkling, the driest style there is, made from 100% Pinot Blanc grown in Okanagan Falls. Barrel fermented, aged five months on lees, and bottled at 11.5% with a crown cap closure. Expect green apple, pear, a touch of brioche from the lees, citrus pith, and the gentle creamy texture that comes from barrel and time. Bone dry. Lifted. Serious sparkling that does not take itself too seriously. Label art by Sarah Gee Miller.
Rigour & Whimsy is a small, family-scale winery in Okanagan Falls co-founded by Costa Gavaris and Jody Costa is the winemaker. Jody is the winegrower. Their approach centres on regenerative farming, building topsoil, increasing biodiversity, and minimizing external inputs. The 5-acre home vineyard sits right against the famed Stormhaven Vineyard of Synchromesh Wines, and just around the corner from Meyer Family.
June has arrived and long evenings are finally back! 🍾 Pop this one open on a warm evening with oysters, salty almonds, a wedge of aged cheddar, or a piece of grilled white fish. It is the sparkling that elevates a Tuesday into something worth marking, without making the evening feel formal.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Thorn & Burrow Gamay Dornfelder 2024, Fraser Valley, BC! 🇨🇦
A chillable light red built for exactly this stretch of the year. 64% Gamay Noir and 34% Dornfelder, given just three days on skins and eight months in neutral barrel on lees. The result is pale, bright, and juicy. Think fresh cranberry, red cherry, pomegranate, and a little wild raspberry, with soft tannins and a low 8.8% alcohol that makes the second glass inevitable. Basically dry. 190 cases made, unfined and unfiltered, low sulphur. Serve it with a deliberate chill, the way they drink young reds in a Paris wine bar in July.
This is the second wine we are featuring from Thorn & Burrow, the project of semi-nomadic, experimental winemaker Alex Thornley. He works in tiny lots, sources from carefully chosen Fraser Valley and Okanagan growers, and leans into low-intervention skin-contact and chillable styles. The Gamay and Dornfelder here come from Langley and Chilliwack fruit. The back label asks the same question it always does: “How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go…?” This is experimental natural wine for the adventurous palate! ❤️
Patio season is here. Put this in the fridge for forty-five minutes, then pour it alongside grilled sausages, a charcuterie board, burgers off the barbecue, or a margherita pizza. It is the red for people who think they only drink white in summer.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Roche Zweigelt Rosé 2025, Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, BC! 🇨🇦
A dry, food-loving rosé made from Zweigelt, an Austrian grape you almost never see in BC. Pale coral in the glass. Fresh raspberry, wild strawberry, watermelon, and a little blood orange, with a savoury edge and bright, clean acidity that runs to a dry finish. 13.8% alcohol. Grown by the Barnay Family on the Naramata Bench and made by the Roche family themselves. The label art is by Andrea Soos, and it is one of the prettiest bottles on the shelf right now.
Roche is one of our favourite Naramata stories. Pénélope Roche is a sixth-generation winemaker from Bordeaux, where her family owned Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, a neighbour of Château Haut-Brion with roots going back to Roman times. Her husband Dylan grew up on the North Shore and found wine while working as a cycling guide in Burgundy. When the family château was sold in 2010, the two of them made the bold move to start over on the Naramata Bench, farming organically and calling themselves vignerons in the truest sense. We had the pleasure of doing an event with Pénélope and visiting their beautiful winery for a gathering hosted by our good friend Aman from Paisley Notebook. The wines taste even better once you have stood on the bench they come from!
Patio season is here. Chill it down and pour it alongside grilled salmon, a charcuterie board, prosciutto and melon, or a simple roast chicken. It is the kind of rosé that makes a Tuesday feel like a small occasion. 💕

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Foolish Wine Vibrant Grenache Rosé, North Naramata, BC! 🇨🇦
A dry Grenache Rosé out of the Okanagan, and the label alone earns a spot on the shelf. That retro geometric pattern in pink and blue is one of the best-looking bottles we carry. Grenache is the grape behind the great pink wines of southern France, and it shows here the way it should: pale salmon in the glass, with wild strawberry, watermelon, ruby grapefruit, and a clean dry finish. Crisp, easy, and made for a warm afternoon.
Here is the story we love. The Coghill and Main families moved to the Okanagan to build Neighbourhood Brewing, fell for wine country, and decided to get involved. Coming from the beer world, they were told by more than a few people that getting into wine was a “Foolish” endeavour. So they named the winery after the insult. Their home vineyard sits in North Naramata, and they work with carefully chosen growers across the valley for small lots of top-tier fruit, focusing on terroir-driven, old-world-inspired wines made in modest quantities. The name is a wink. The wine is serious.
Patio season is here. Chill it down hard and bring it to Kits Beach, the balcony, or the backyard. Pair it with grilled prawns, a salty cheese, or nothing at all. This is the bottle you open without overthinking it.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Terravista Vineyards Verdejo 2025, Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, BC! 🇨🇦
This is Canada’s only single-varietal Verdejo. The grape is the pride of Rueda in central Spain, and almost nobody grows it on this side of the Atlantic. Pale straw in the glass. Expect everything Verdejo does best: citrus and white peach up front, a green herbal lift like fennel and fresh-cut grass, a stony minerality through the middle, and the variety’s signature whisper of bitter almond on a crisp, dry finish. 13.4% alcohol. Made from organically farmed grapes grown at Lone Hand Ranch and Naramata Outlook Vineyards. Aromatic, food-friendly, and built for warm weather.
Terravista exists because of two Okanagan legends. Bob and Senka Tennant founded Black Hills Estate Winery and made Nota Bene, the cult red that helped put BC on the map. We remember those days well. We would get a stack of Nota Bene in on release and watch the whole thing sell out within a day. After they sold Black Hills in 2007, the Tennants were not finished. They bought a sloping, rocky piece of the Naramata Bench and made a genuinely risky bet, planting Albariño and Verdejo when no one else in the country had. Senka once said the decision came down to instinct. Something inside just told her. In 2019 they handed the winery to locals Eric and Dallas Thor, who farm with solar power, sheep for weeding, and a light touch in the cellar. Veteran winemaker Nadine Kinvig, New Zealand trained and now on her 20th BC vintage, runs the cellar with a focus on crisp, aromatic, age-worthy whites.
Patio season is here. Chill it down and pour it alongside fish tacos, grilled prawns, ceviche, or a plate of Manchego and marcona almonds. It is the bottle to reach for when the sun finally clears the rooftops and you want something nobody at the table has tried before.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Thorn & Burrow LA LA 2024, Chilliwack, BC! 🇨🇦
A skin-contact white wine made from 50% La Crescent and 50% L’Acadie, two cold-climate hybrid grapes you almost never see outside of Quebec and the Maritimes. Pale gold in the glass with a faint copper tint from the time on skins. Candied apricot, burnt lemon, lemon sherbet, green pear, and pink lady apple skin on the nose, with a subtle natural-wine lift behind it. The palate is textured and savoury, with zippy acid cutting through citrus, apricot, peach, and a quiet hum of underripe guava and pineapple. Bone dry, low alcohol at 10.8%, 210 cases made. Two parcels were pressed separately and given 5 and 8 days on skins, then blended and aged 8 months in neutral barrel on heavy lees. Low sulphur, unfined, unfiltered.
Thorn & Burrow is the project of Alex Thornley, a self-described semi-nomadic and experimental winemaker who founded the label after years of travelling, fermenting, and getting curious. He works in small lots, focuses on skin-contact whites, and sources from quality BC growers rather than owning a vineyard outright. The fruit for this bottle comes from Whispering Horse Vineyard in Chilliwack, a ten-plus-year-old planting where La Crescent and L’Acadie were grown side by side, picked together, and fermented together. The back label asks one question. “How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go…?”
Late May in Vancouver is exactly when a wine like this earns its place at the table. Chill it well, pair it with grilled prawns, a tinned fish board, fresh chèvre, or a sharp green salad with a vinaigrette that fights back. It will surprise the natural wine sceptic and reward the regular natural wine drinker in equal measure.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): Kopke Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2018, Douro, Portugal! 🇵🇹
Deep ruby-purple in the glass with an opaque ebony core. Ripe wild berries, violet, dark stone fruit, cacao, and a thread of black pepper on the nose, with a faint balsamic note in the background. The palate is rich and full-bodied, layered with blackberry, raspberry, cherry, dark chocolate, and a hint of menthol. Firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long enduring finish in the classic Kopke style. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Sousão from a single 2018 harvest. Aged four to six years in oak vats before bottling. 20% alcohol. Drink it now, no decanting required. Mundus Vini awarded it Gold in 2023.
Kopke is the oldest Port house in Portugal, founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke, the Consul General of the Hanseatic League. That makes the house 388 years old this year, older than every other producer in the Douro by more than a century. The family bought their first farm in the Douro in 1781 and shifted from buyer to producer. In 1922 they purchased Quinta de São Luiz, a 125-hectare A-grade estate that remains the home of the house today. The bottle itself is worth a mention. Matte black with stencilled lettering, it looks like nothing else on the shelf.
Late May in Kits means the patio nights are getting longer but the evenings still cool down. Pour an ounce or two after dinner with a square of dark chocolate or a wedge of Stilton, or pair it with a flourless chocolate cake if you really want to make a moment of it. The bottle stays good for two to four months in the fridge once opened, so it pulls double duty as a Sunday-evening sipper through the rest of the season.

May Feature (and what we’re sipping): St. George Bruto Americano, Alameda, California! 🇺🇸
A bittersweet red aperitivo built as an American answer to Campari. Vibrant Seville orange and cinnamon on the nose, with sandalwood and a hint of pine forest underneath. The palate leads with clean bitterness from gentian root, opens into a herbaceous, woodsy mid-palate from balsam fir and California buckthorn bark, and finishes long with bitter citrus pulling through. 24% alcohol. Naturally coloured with cochineal for a deep ruby red. Use it anywhere you would reach for Campari. It absolutely sings in a Negroni, a Boulevardier, a Bicicletta, or a simple spritz with soda and an orange peel.
St. George Spirits has been distilling in Alameda, California since 1982, in an old aircraft hangar on the bay. They are one of the original American craft distilleries, predating the entire movement, and they refuse to chase trends. Master distiller Lance Winters and distiller Dave Smith made Bruto as a tongue-in-cheek love letter to the Italian aperitivo tradition. The name translates roughly to “ugly American,” a wink at the audacity of an American making an Italian classic. The full botanical list is kept proprietary. Some ingredients are hot-steeped, others are cold-infused, then blended into a single beautifully complex liqueur.
Patio season is here. Build a Negroni with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Bruto. Garnish with a wide strip of orange peel. Sit outside until the sun drops behind Kits Point. That is the move.

05/15/2026

On the eve of World Whisky Day, here’s a fine one that we’re enjoying and like to share with you: Macaloney’s Cath-Nah-Aven, Canadian Single Malt Whisky, Vancouver Island, BC! 🇨🇦
Deep mahogany in the glass with garnet edges. Red berries, plums, dark raisins, dried fig, walnut, and a thread of toasted oak on the nose. The palate is rich and creamy, full of stewed plum, sultana, baking spice, dark chocolate, and a savoury malt backbone. Structured tannins and a long, complex finish that keeps unfolding. Aged in Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks from Andalucía, all American oak, then bottled at 46% with no chill filtration and no colour added. This is Macaloney’s salute to the great Sherried whiskies of the river Spey, built from the ground up on Vancouver Island.
Macaloney’s Island Distillery was founded in 2016 in Saanich by Dr. Graeme Macaloney, a Scottish-born fermentation scientist who spent years assembling a team of legends to bring proper single malt whisky-making to Canada. The late Dr. Jim Swan, one of the most respected whisky consultants in the world, helped design the maturation programme. Mike Nicolson, a former master distiller at Diageo, set up the still house. Twin Forsyths copper pot stills, shipped from Scotland, sit at the heart of the operation. Over 270 Canadian founder-owners helped fund the build. The result is a working distillery that takes itself as seriously as anywhere on Speyside.
Pour a finger neat. Sit with it for ten minutes before the first sip. If you want to push it, a square of dark chocolate or a slice of aged cheddar will do the job. The kind of bottle you reach for after a long day or when you have someone over who actually wants to talk about what they are drinking.

May Feature and a lovely gift for Mother’s Day: St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Savoie, France! ❤️🇫🇷
A pale gold liqueur with the scent of fresh elderflower blossoms, ripe pear, and a thread of white peach. The palate is delicate, lifted, and only lightly sweet, with a finish that hints at lychee and grapefruit. 20% alcohol. Pour an ounce into a flute of sparkling wine for the original St-Germain Cocktail. Stir it into a gin and tonic. Splash it into a Margarita. Mix it with sparkling water and a twist of lemon for the lightest aperitif of the season. Bartenders nicknamed it “bartender’s ketchup” for a reason. It makes everything better.
The story behind this bottle is real and a little wild. Wild elderflower trees in the Savoie region of the French Alps bloom for just three to six weeks in late spring. About 40 to 50 independent harvesters fan out across the foothills in the cool early morning when the aromatic oils in the blossoms are most concentrated. They pick by hand, then ride bicycles down the mountain with their flowers carefully cradled to keep the petals from bruising. Once they reach a collection station, they are paid by the kilo. The flowers must be macerated within 24 hours or the aroma is lost. Up to 1,000 blossoms go into every bottle. Each bottle is numbered and stamped with the year of the harvest. The liqueur was created in 2007 by Robert Cooper, named after the bohemian Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood of Paris, and bottled in an Art Deco design that pays homage to the Belle Époque.
A teaspoon in a flute of Champagne, a strawberry on the rim, and a few fresh peonies on the table. This sweet gem can be added to a gin & tonic or other creative cocktails, or simply enjoyed on it’s own over ice. The beautiful glass bottle itself is a keepsake!
