The District of Tofino is sharing an update from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit regarding a full closure of Highway 4 between Chalet Road (Cameron Lake) and Aspeden Road (Port Alberni) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 9 AM to 3 PM.

During the closure, crews will align barriers, remove hazard trees, and maintain the rockfall fence in the area.

Please follow the direction of all traffic control personnel and signage in the area.

Campfire Ban In Effect 🔥🚫🌲

That crackling fire might be cozy but during dry Island summers, its just not worth the risk.

🚒A campfire ban is now in effect and will be until October 31, 2025, or until the order is rescinded.

This prohibition is being enacted to help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety.

What is NOT allowed during this prohibition:

❌ Sky lanterns
❌ Binary exploding targets
❌ Fireworks
❌ Burn barrels or burn cages
❌ Air curtain burners
❌ Carbonizers
❌ Controlled air incinerators
❌ Wood-fired hot tubs, pizza ovens, and other wood-fired devices (unless vented through a building flue)

What is ALLOWED
✅an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 for the Vancouver Island Coastline from Nootka Sound to Barkley Sound, including Tofino.

Elevated ocean levels are expected around high tide at 11:04 AM on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, accompanied by strong winds, large waves, and a high storm surge. Water levels are anticipated to exceed approximately 100 centimetres above the Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT).

The combination of surges and waves may cause damage along the coast. Flooding is likely near the coastline and in nearby low-lying areas.

Beachgoers are encouraged to check out www.CoastSmart.ca for coastal safety information.

The District of Tofino is actively monitoring conditions. If conditions worsen, beach access points may be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲
Due to the potential of coastal flooding, the District of Tofino is offering free sandbags for residents & businesses.

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Sand and bags are available outside the gate at the Public Works Yard, 620 Industrial Way.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Please bring your own shovel to fill the bags and ties (e.g., string or zip ties) to secure them.

The Public Art Advisory Committee, which contributes to beautifying the community through public art, is seeking a dedicated individual to join its committee as a Community Representative.

As part of this creative committee, you will be involved in:

▪️ Advising on public art issues and trends relevant to the Public Art Program and Policy or related public art initiatives.
▪️ Advising and consulting on specific issues, such as donations, proposals, and commissions of work.
▪️ Determining the type of competitions for a particular art project and reviewing the Call to Artists and the Competition Briefs.
