🇨🇦💨 How Canadian Federal Excise Tax Works on Va**ng Products (2026 Update). See our website blog for full details.
If you v**e in Canada, you’ve probably noticed price changes over the past few years. A big reason? The Canadian Federal Excise Tax on va**ng products.
Let’s break it down clearly 👇
📌 What Is the Federal Excise Tax on V**es?
The Government of Canada introduced a federal excise duty on va**ng products in 2022. This tax applies to:
✔️ E-liquids (freebase & salt ni****ne)
✔️ Bottled v**e juice
✔️ Pre-filled pods
✔️ Disposable v**es
✔️ DIY ni****ne base products
The tax is applied based on volume (mL) — not retail price.
💰 How Is the Tax Calculated?
The federal rate is charged per 2mL of e-liquid.
For example:
• The first 10mL is taxed at a set rate per 2mL
• Every additional 10mL is taxed at a higher incremental rate
So the larger the e-liquid capacity, the higher the excise duty.
That means:
🔹 30mL bottles
🔹 60mL shortfills
🔹 30mL+ high-capacity disposables (like 48K and 80K puff devices)
… all carry significant excise tax built into the retail price.
Current Federal Excise Duty Rates ....As of the most recent update:
- $1.12 per 2 mL (or fraction thereof) for the first 10 mL
- $1.12 per 10 mL (or fraction thereof) for amounts above 10 mL
- Therefore a 30ml bottle would impose $7.84 of excise tax in the "non specified" provinces of Newfoundland, BC, Sask and Nova Scotia and double ($15.68) in "Specified Provinces" of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, PEI and New Brunswick. See our website blog for more details.-
*These rates were increased in July 2024 following federal budget amendments and apply nationwide.
🏛 What About Provincial “Double” Excise Tax?
Some provinces such as Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI (and Nova Scotia this Spring) participate in a coordinated va**ng duty system where:
➡️ The federal government collects both the federal AND provincial portion
➡️ The excise amount is effectively doubled
If you’re ordering within participating provinces, this impacts final pricing.
