On World Fair Trade Day, we’re taking a moment to reflect on why ethical sourcing is a core part of our business. This week on May 9th we celebrate 80 Years of Fairtrade!! It all began in 1946 when Mennonite volunteer Edna Ruth Byler, sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee, visited a women’s sewing class in Puerto Rico. She was struck not only by the beauty of the crafts but also by the poverty in which the women lived. She started selling the textiles out of the trunk of her car in Pennsylvania, distributing all proceeds back to the artists, pioneering Fairtrade. In 1994, Transfair Canada (now Fairtrade Canada) was our country’s first certifying body for Fairtrade goods. While most licensed products now use our international logo, the original "bucketboy" trademark is still owned by Fairtrade Canada and can be spotted across Canada.
