[Vancouver International Wine Festival]

The Vancouver International Wine Festival kicks off next month and we are very much looking forward to being in attendance! Our very own Chris Turyk will be a presenter at the "Celebrating Excellence" luncheon.

”The Vancouver International Wine Festival, Canada’s premier food & wine event, has three mandates: to provide an informative, educational and entertaining wine experience for public and trade; to be a premier marketing opportunity for the wine industry and festival partners; and to raise funds for the Bard on the Beach Theatre Society. The 2025 festival will take place February 22-March 2.

This is a rare opportunity to meet owners, winemakers and senior representatives from wineries around the globe. For either the experienced wine lover or the novice, the festival has something to please every palate and pocketbook.”

[Happy New Year]

Now that the New Year has officially begun and we’ve all had a chance to properly recover from the Holidays, let us remind you that the Tasting Room is open! Come pay us a visit Monday -Tuesday from 12pm to 4pm and Wednesday - Sunday from 11am to 5pm. 🥂

The Restaurant is closed until February 12th, giving our amazing kitchen staff and talented Chef an opportunity to gather their thoughts and come up with some new and exciting offerings for the season ahead.

[Humble Brag]

Humble brag incoming… We are just so thrilled to have made Gismondi On Wine’s top 10 list of Canadian Pinot Noirs! Our Unsworth Vineyards Pinot Noir Saison Vineyards 2021 scored a respectable 92 points - we have a few magnums left in the tasting room, and suggest you keep your eyes peeled for the release of the 2022 in the coming weeks!

“Fragrant and lifted wild strawberries, raspberries, pink florals sail through this lighter (12.3%) pinot, giving an air of finesse and elegance that stretches from first whiff through a lingering pink peppercorn finish. Tannins are slight and supple, hugging this bright red, and welcoming numerous food pairings (I'm voting wild salmon / wild mushrooms).”

Speaking of fish and mushrooms…on the menu we have this gorgeous albacore tuna dish with shaved pine mushrooms, pickled watercress, charred cipollini and Salt Spring Island mussel emulsion. Delicious! Happy Friday!

[Exciting Things Ahead]

While some of us refer to this space as the new Tasting Room, it is so much more than that. This new space will house barrel halls, dedicated spaces for wines during their maturation and bottling areas to name a few.

While this new building exists for the wines first and foremost, we of course need a beautiful space to showcase them, and to host all of you - A relaxed, spacious new Tasting Room will allow for a wider breath of wine experiences, always in our unpretentious manner, allowing us the opportunity to express and share the unique terroir of Cowichan Valley in a phenomenal new capacity.

[Cowichan Valley Pinot Gris 2023]

Another flattering review by none other than Master of Wines Geoffrey Moss, this time about our Unsworth Vineyards Cowichan Valley Pinot Gris 2023 - “A restrained, mineral-driven pinot gris that's Cowichan through and through. It's awash in oyster shell and chalk, backed by zesty lemon, Bartlett pear, and white blossoms. There's real verve here, with a precision to the palate that speaks both to purpose and poise. Recommended and excellent value.” This wine scored a respectable 90 points as per Gismondi on Wine.

Pinot Gris is a pleasure to enjoy with creamy pasta dishes and white fish tacos. Join us in the Unsworth Restaurant where we offer perfectly paired seasonal features and a vast array of mouthwatering offerings. 🍽️🥂

[Pinot Gris Saison Vineyards 2023]

There’s just something about the clarity, precision and intention with which Geoffrey Moss writes that really speaks to his sensibilities about wine. About our Unsworth Vineyards Pinot Gris Saison Vineyards 2023 he writes:

”When you taste wines like this, it's hard to argue against pinot gris in the Cowichan Valley. Expect a combination of bright green apple, lemon, and perfumed pear blossoms, layered with doughy lees and a saline backbone that carries through to the finish. Seamlessly balanced, with a lip-smacking tension that keeps pulling you back in, this is all about purity, minerality, and restraint.” This wine scored a respectable 90 points.

To which we say Cheers! And thank you for such a thoughtful take on one of our favourites.

[Island Taste Trail]

We are excited to announce that we are once again participating in the Island Taste Trail, a mid-Island celebration of local food and beverage, which returns today, October 18th, and runs until November 10th! Restaurants from Nanaimo, Parksville Qualicum Beach, Comox Valley, Campbell River and Cowichan will all be included on the Fall Taste Trail.

At Unsworth you can expect to enjoy a mini Vancouver Island cheese plate with a five-wine tasting flight in the Tasting Room. Featuring island producers such as Little Qualicum Cheeseworks, Natural Pastures, That's My Jam, Jenny Marie Crackers and the Whole Beast, all perfectly paired with a set of exceptional wines, handcrafted onsite.
*Can be made vegetarian and/or gluten-free upon request.

This initiative aims to support locally owned businesses across the island - For every $100 spent with a BC local restaurant, $68 is re-circulated back into our BC economy.

Each and every local buying decision helps support local foodpreneurs, farmers, fishers, makers, producers and harvesters. It has an incremental to our local agri-food economy – and it tastes great!

[Harvest]

We get one chance per year to make wine…and now’s the time.

Wine quality hinges on fruit quality, with the goal of our winemaking team being to preserve and highlight what we get from our 10+ vineyards. So far, 2024 seems reminiscent of 2017 with vague notes of 2020 - a long season with ripening occurring at a glacial pace made for some nail biting moments, but we are quite pleased with the flavour ripeness at low potential alcohols.

This balance seems to be Cowichan's calling card. Small production by design, we focus on handcrafted wines of distinction using signature techniques that showcase the very best of the fruit we grow.

We can’t wait to share this year’s yield with you all! 🍷

[Happy Friday]

Tired of having to come up with another creative dinner idea? Don’t worry, we got you covered.

On the menu this weekend, in no particular order, lobster mushroom dip with smoked cheddar and nero focaccia. Farmhouse chicken supreme with chanterelle, spinach & ricotta tortellini, chanterelle velouté and roasted beet and a dish we call Morgan's Pears, poached with saffron & allegro, dark chocolate mousse farci and phyllo cracker.

All of which with a suggested wine pairing, of course. 🥂

[Officially Fall]

It is now officially and undeniably fall here in the Cowichan Valley. If you’re looking for a wine that pairs well with the changing of the seasons, might we suggest a Pinot Noir?

With notes of bright cherry, violet, and baking spices on the nose our 2022 Pinot Noir gives way to a palate full of wild berries and earthy, forest floor notes.

Better yet, why not come by the Tasting Room where our helpful and knowledgeable staff can guide you through a flight of your choosing, all while enjoying vineyard views. Sip, savour, and get acquainted with all that Unsworth has to offer.

Pizza! Available from 11-5! Need we say more?

Our pizza ovens are a seasonal delight, we invite you to come make the most of it. Sadly, as fall approaches it means that we’ll have to put the pizza oven to bed, so come get it while it lasts. Fear not though, we have some secret plans in the works to expand and improve our pizza offerings. Stay tuned!
