We’re back at UnWined this week after an incredible spring spent exploring some of Europe’s most exciting food and wine regions.

Over the past several weeks, we travelled through Portugal, Italy, Spain, and France, meeting passionate producers, discovering hidden gems, and learning more about the traditions, people, and flavours that make each region unique.

Pictured with us is Ferran, the talented winemaker at Mas Anglada in Catalunya, whose dedication to crafting authentic wines perfectly reflects the spirit of the places we love to discover.

We can’t wait to reconnect with everyone, share stories from the road, and introduce you to some of the amazing wines and discoveries that inspired us along the way.

Stop by the store, say hello, and let’s talk wine!

See you at UnWined! 🍷

New Products May

Well while getting organized for my usual new products newsletter I realized that (nearly) all of them were wines!  With that in mind I've opted to turn this into a quick social media post rather than a full on newsletter.

So, new wines!  We've had a big focus on pink this month, with a new Aussie, South African, Canadian, and Cava rosé arriving in.

Speaking of Australia we also have a couple new reds in stock with bright colorful labels.

Canada has a new Cab Franc, and Germany has a new Pinot and high end Riesling.

Yes, the premium wines continue to return with some high end French and Italian offerings as well.

Lastly our fridge has a new iced tea cooler from Drumheller, and more locally, Plum As You Are from Core Values, and Bow-Hemian Pilsner, which will be open for tasting this Saturday!

As well, I think it's common knowledge at this point that I'm leaving UnWined, and my last day is tomorrow so come say goodbye!

Wine Fact Wednesday!

All About Pinot!

Grapes in this family grow in tight, conical bunches, reminiscent of a pine cone.  It's this likeness that gave them the Pinot name!

There are six different grape varietals in the Pinot Family, and each of those has several synonyms depending on where in the world it is being grown.  The big three though are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.  That second name in these cases refers to the color of the grape, so Pinot Blanc is a white (or green) skinned variant of the Pinot grape, and Pinot Noir is a black skinned variation.  Gris/Grigio means grey, but who's ever heard of a grey wine?!

The skins of Pinot Gris grapes develop a pinkish/grey color when fully ripe, and this can be used to make a rosé style wine!  This Pinot Gris Rosé from Nichol Winery in BC saw a 36 hour skin contact period where that pinkish color bleeds from the skins and tints the wine a beautiful pink.  The result is a rosé bursting with flavours of nectarine, and despite these grapes being so fully ripened, this wine still shows wicked high acidity.  It's crisp, complex, and perfect for dinner on the patio.

If a more standard Pinot Grigio is your thing, then look no further than Dal Cero.  This is a Veneto Pinot Grigio made with quality over quantity, and gives clear melon and mineral notes.

For Pinot Blanc, consider Austria.  This offering from Prieler gives an intense pear note which can even stray into a banana like  realm.

Finally, Pinot Noir, this entry from Frey comes from Rheinhessen, Germany.  This cooler climate gives tart aromas of red currant and cranberry.

No matter which bottle you choose, you're getting a fantastic wine.

We're looking for a full time employee!

With our manager moving on we are in search of someone who can operate the day to day of UnWined. Whether that means taking on all of the manager duties or just being a knowledgeable, friendly face to our customers will be dependant on the experience level of the applicant, we encourage anyone with the passion to apply!

We're looking for someone who can work 4-5 days a week, generally Tuesday/Wednesday through Friday/Saturday. Our hours are always 12:00 - 20:00, everyday. We also require you to be over 18, and have a valid Proserve certificate.

What we can offer in return is an opportunity to vastly grow your knowledge in field of wine, beer, and spirits by being exposed to it on a daily basis. You will also have access to attend future events (held by our existing manager - you won't be expected to host events), and we offer a staff discount.

If this interests you please get in touch with us on here, in person, or send an email to [email protected] and we'll start taking some of the finer details. We look forward to hearing from you!

Some important news today, in the near future I will be leaving UnWined. I'll be keeping the details a little close to the chest right now while things get sorted out. Perhaps most importantly though, the Wine Workshop lives! I'll continue with hosting tastings in here once a month until we wrap up the World of Wine series. Beyond that, we need a new full time employee to work the shop! If that interests you, get in touch with us in person or by email ([email protected]) and we'll chat about details. We don't necessarily need to find someone who will take on 100% of the manager duties, so we encourage anyone with the passion to apply!

I'll share more details in the future and give a more formal goodbye in some time. For now, come drink some Picpoul de Pinet and celebrate the arrival of sunshine and warm weather!

Cheers!
