With the summer's heat now upon us, we have two wines to offer this week that may just fit the bill for a great meal on the deck.

First we go to British Columbia where we find Liquidity Wines, a boutique estate winery in Okanagan Falls which crafts wines from its hillside vineyard overlooking Vaseux Lake. There, Chardonnay grapes are handpicked, hand-sorted and cluster pressed. After 11 months of fermentation in French oak, they are blended and bottled.

The full-bodied, slightly creamy Liquidity 2022 Estate Chardonnay offers notes of mandarin, lemon poppyseed cake, and papaya. On the palate, it is bright, fresh and vibrant with a beautiful acidity and textural complexity. It finishes with a hint of spice. Throughout, it maintains the characteristic richness of the Chardonnay grape.
Pair this wine with creamy chicken and mushroom orzo, squash soup or fish tacos. Wine Align rates this vintage at 90 points.

Next we venture to the cool climate of Uruguay’s Leyda Valley. Well-regarded for several grapes varieties, Undurraga's 2023 Gran Reserva Pinot Noir is no exception.

This luminous, ruby-red wine presents a nose of damp earth with hints of red berries, accompanied by subtle smoky hints and a whisper of balsamic complexity. Silky-smooth and fruit-forward on the palate, it has a sour cherry entry that seemingly ripens through the finish, with refined tannins and balanced acidity supported by a gentle oak influence. A true pinot noir, the finish is long and lingering with savory undertones. Enjoy this wine with a variety of foods, including mixed bean or tuna salad, grilled vegetables or salmon, roasted squab, or mixed grill. Anthony Gismondi gives this vintage 88 points.

Both wines are available for a free taste on Thursday and Friday, May 28 & 29 between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at the store.

You can't go wrong when your grapes come from Italy and France. So join us this weekfor these delightful wine offerings:

Garganega grapes are indigenous to the basaltic-volcanic soils of the smaller Soave Classico D.O.C. and were introduced to the Classic Italian area some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Inama Soave Classico 2022 is a white wine full of personality – fresh, citrusy, minerally, steely and at the same time soave – “suave” or “smooth” in Italian.

Pale yellow in the glass, the nose suggests white peach and orchard fruits, with wildflowers and subtle almond and marzipan beneath. On the palate, notes of juicy stone fruit and apple, with more citrus and melon. Light and refreshing, it finishes crisp and persistent, with just the right amount of tart minerality that lingers. Approachable and food friendly, pair this wine with grilled seafood or shellfish, sushi, light chicken dishes or fresh seasonal salads. James Suckling gives this vintage a 90 rating.

For our red, we visit Maison Ogier in the southern Rhône region where they have been producing grenache-based wines for nearly 150 years. The coastal French region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with cooling mistral winds.

Ogier Ventoux 2022 Rhône Valley Rouge is a classic blend of Grenache and Syrah, along with some Mourvèdre. It begins with aromas of blueberries and black currents. This medium bold wine continues with savory red and blue fruit flavours along with leather and smoke and accented with hints of licorice and spice that harmoniously combine to make a tasty vintage. The tannins make an elegant impression and finish well. It is a straightforward, well-made red suitable for everyday enjoyment with stews, grilled meats, and winter soups. Anthony Gismondi rates it at 87 points.

Both wines are available for a free taste on Thursday and Friday, May 21 & 22 between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at the store.

Every week we are tasting something at Parkview Liquor Cabinet. Inevitably there are some parts of the world that feature time and again. This week is no exception with wines from Italy and New Zealand.

After 30 years in Canada Ermenegildo Giusti returned to his native Italy and founded Giusti Wine. Today the winery own 130 hectares of vines spread over 10 different estates in the province of Treviso. From vines over 70 years old, the classic Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes are harvested, which are vinified and "ripasso" according to tradition on the pomace of their own Amarone Classico. This is a velvety and full bodied wine that provides warmth and elegance. Aged in oak enriching the structure and offering a long, harmonious finish.

Founded in 1996 and named after the ship that in 1827 charted and explored the Marlborough Coast, in New Zealand, Astrolabe wines were created by seasoned winemaker Simon Waghorn together with his wife Jane. The regional geography provides a long growing season and the locally sourced grapes leads to gorgeous flavours. Pale straw colour with a lemon and lime aroma, this wine has a citrus taste and a dry mineral finish. Goes great with salads and seafood.

Both wines are available for a free taste on Thursday and Friday, May 14 & 15 between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at the store.

Once in a while, we return to try a few of our favourites again. For this week's tasting we take you first to Uruguay and then across the Atlantic to Italy's Chianti region.

Although grapevines were first brought to Uruguay by Basque immigrants in the 1870s, a serious wine industry only began in the 1980 and 90s. Uruguay has a gentle maritime climate facing southeast and close to the cold Atlantic Ocean, which is perfect for the 200 or so wineries, most of them family owned.

GARZÓN ALBARIÑO RESERVA 2024 is a highly regarded dry white wine from this Bodega in Maldonado, Uruguay. Produced from 100% Albariño grapes, it is their flagship offering and is now the country's top selling white. This wine shows a brilliant pale yellow-green tint with an expressive nose. On the palate, it is crisp with vibrant fruit (yellow plums, lemon, peach, nectarine) and white floral notes (honeysuckle, herbs) flavours. It finishes with mineral undertones. Pair this with a citrus prawn salad, an Asian or Peruvian ceviche dish, or perhaps oysters and risotto. Anthony Gismondi gives it a rating of 91.

Chianti Rufina is the smallest subzone of the larger Chianti DOCG. All wines in the Chianti DOCG must contain at least 70% Sangiovese and are influence by the combination of climate, soils and altitude found in the Rufina, Tuscany area. While primarily Sangiovese, NIPOZZANO RESERVA 2020 CHIANTI RUFINA from Frescobaldi is blended with a small amount of local Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for about 24 months, first in stainless steel, then barriques and then in the bottle before release.

This medium-bodied wine has a smooth and silky texture wine, but still retains some of the signature rough edge of a good Chianti. It tastes of tart red berry and a bit of apple infused with wild herbs and black pepper. Sweet and chewy tannins lead into the very long finish with lingering touches of wild herbs, to***co, vanilla and black tea. A lovely, succulent wine, it also makes a great pairing for all your favorite Italian dishes. Luca Maroni rates it at 94.

Both wines are available for a free taste on Thursday May 7 & 8 between 5pm and 7pm. Whether you missed these wines the first time or are just looking for some good taste and camaraderie, we look forward to seeing you there - at Medicine Hat's 2026 Best Liquor Store.

We seem to have a thing for Sauvignon here at the Parkview Liquor Cabinet. Once again we are featuring Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc two of the world’s most beloved grape varieties. On this occasion they are both Southern Hemisphere - One from Argentina and the other from New Zealand.

Just over 30 years ago Terrazas de los Andes was established in the cool, high-altitude terraces of the Mendosa wine region of Argentina. The company acquired a century old winery built in 1895, and equipped it with modern, sustainable technology to ensure the quality of their wines. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley that has chalky tannins, moderate acidity and ripe berry flavors. Light notes of smoke and dried herbs mingle on the finish.

Founded in 2008 by Peter Yealands, this certified fully sustainable winery is situated on a wild and rugged coastline in the Awatere Valley in the Marlborough wine region on the north-eastern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. At the winery, the fruit was destemmed and gently pressed and clarified. The clear juice was then fermented separately using a range of selected yeasts. A long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks retained the vibrant, fresh characters Sauvignon Blanc is known for. Pale lemon in color with all the usual aromas and flavour that makes Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc a worldwide favourite.

Both wines are available for a free taste on Thursday April 30th and May 1st between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

This week's selections once again demonstrate the magnificence of European wine. For our white, a northern Italy Pinot Grigio; for our red, a Spanish Garnacha.

Once a geopolitical centre connecting the spice routes of Western Europe with Central and Eastern Europe, the Italian wine region of Friuli is known for more than a dozen grape varieties and centuries-old vineyards. The light golden 2024 Attems Pinot Grigio is from low-yield, hand-harvested vines, planted in marl and sandstone soils cooled by the Bora winds. The nose suggests pears, minerality and white floral notes. On the palate, this medium bodied wine offers good acidity with plenty of pear fruit, almonds, melons, and honey. It’s short finish is crisp and clean. Nice on its own, it is even better with food – most definitely a simply prepared White fish or a chilled pasta dish. Drink over the next couple of years. Anthony Gismondi rates this vintage at 90 points and calls it a masterclass in Pinot Grigio.

Bodegas San Alejandro lies in Spain's Calatayud DO, just southeast of Rioja. Their Garnacha (Grenache) vineyards, sitting some 900 metres above sea level, produce black, dense, chewy and lip-smacking wines. Evodia Old Vine Garnacha 2023 is bright ruby with aromas of fresh strawberry and raspberry, deepened by notes of licorice, black tea and pungent herbs. It is supple in texture, offering sweet red fruit flavors and showing no rough edges. A smoky note comes up with air, adding complexity to a nicely persistent, red berry-dominated finish. Serve it with grilled bavette steak, sausage casserole, or grilled chicken breasts. Wine Advocate gives this vintage 92 points.

Both wines are available for a sample between 5pm and 7pm on both Thursday and Friday April 23th and 24th. We look forward to seeing you at the Cabinet.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are two of the world’s most beloved grape varieties that come from the same genetic family. These two iconic grapes have shaped wine culture across the globe, but each has its own distinct character and place in the vineyard. This week our free tasting offers an excellent example of each wine from opposite ends of the world.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is from Chateau La Freynelle a Bordeaux (France) based winery. Founded in 1789 this winery has been in the same family ownership for seven generations and since 1990 is in the hands of Véronique Barthe, the first girl in the family to own the property since the French Revolution. This cuvee has a wide aromatic palette, it is characterized by intense fruit characters and lightly oaky notes.

First established in 1993 by the Johnson Family in Marlborough New Zealand, they produced their first vintage under the Spy Valley label in 2000. The winery sits just up the road from the Waihopai Station, a secure communication facility run by the New Zealand government- inspiring the name Spy Valley. Passion fruit, ripe melon, herbal notes and hints of mineral come through on the nose. The fruit follows on the palate with great weight and crisp acidity.

Both wines are available for a sample between 5pm and 7pm on both Thursday and Friday April 16th and 17th. We look forward to seeing you there.

Our first choice this week is SIMONNET-FEBVRE CHABLIS 2023 which comes from the legendary French Kimmeridgian Limestone soils. These soils impart exceptional density and minerality structure, allowing them to age for decades.

This 100% Chardonnay presents with classic young Chablis brightness - pale yellow with a green shimmer. On the nose, it expresses ripe orchard fruit—pear, yellow apple, and a touch of melon with a subtle citrus zest and a faint floral lift. The palate is round and charming up front, with generous fruit and a supple mid palate. It finishes, with a tangy acidity, a saline edge, and long persistence. It pairs well with oysters, shellfish, grilled white fish, sushi, or anything that loves bright acidity and minerality. Natalie Maclean rates this vintage at 90 points.

Hand harvesting from limestone clay soils and the traditional Italian Abruzzo pergola training system help produce our rich red wine selection -TORRE ZAMBRA VALLE MARIS MONTEPULCIANO D'ABRUZZO 2022.

It opens with a generous nose of red cherry, plum, and cranberry, accented by subtle hints of dried herbs and a refined chocolatey finish. On tasting, it is full bodied with juicy red fruit, supple texture, and gentle tannins. A touch of spice and cocoa adds depth. Fresh acidity keeps it lively, finishing dry and clean. This wine could potentially be cellared until 2031. Perfect with hearty pasta, wood fired pizza, grilled meats, aged cheeses, or classic marinara and meatballs. James Suckling gives this vintage 91 points.

Both wines are available for a sample on Thursday April 9th and Friday April 10th between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at the store. This week we are featuring two excellent European wines during our free tasting. They will be accompanied by a range of whisky's and some new pre-mixed coolers.

The red wine is a Borolo from the Piedmont wine region of Italy. Barolo is a much sought after wine, which is bold and crafted excusively fron Nebbiolo grapes. It is known for its rich flavours, firm tannins and aging potential. This example is Terre del Borolo, a wine cooperative founded in 1958. It goes great with red meat, game stews and pot roasts and also mature cheese. 91/100 points from wine critic James Suckling.

The white wine is a Chardonnay from winemaker Joseph Drouhin. It comes from the Macon area in the Southern part of the Burgundy wine region. This is a 2023 vintage which was one of the hottest years in Burgundy. This aromatic and fresh vintage is expected to be highly appealing. Prefect accompaniment to full-flavored fish dishes and charcuterie, or try it alone as an aperitif.

Both wines are available for a sample on Thursday April 2nd and Friday April 3rd between 5pm and 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at the store.

Two different northern hemisphere west coasts provide surprising wines for our Wine Tasting this week.

From Portugal, Cabriz Colheita Selecionada Branco 2024 is a versatile blend of Encruzado, Bical, Malvasia-Fina, and Cerceal-Branco grapes. Its pale straw colour, showing glints of green, opens with a lively bouquet of citrus and orchard fruit layered with subtle floral and tropical fruit notes. Crisp, refreshing, and balanced on the palate, citrus and apple lead the way, followed by hints of peach. The acidity is bright but not sharp, giving the wine a clean profile. It finishes fresh and lightly fruity, with a whisper of minerality that lingers. This versatile wine pairs well with seafood, grilled shrimp, endive salads, chicken dishes, sushi, aged cheeses, or as a crisp aperitif. James Suckling rates this vintage at 89 points.

Hand harvested, fermented in the Okanagan Valley with wild yeasts for 10 months in concrete and French oak barriques, Black Hills Estate Winery Bona Fide 2024 is a vintage blend of Syrah, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Sangiovese which offers many surprises. Its aroma is bold, dark fruited - blackberry, black cherry, and a hint of plum - with subtle touches of spice, earth, and a faint savory note. On tasting, the blackberry and cherry take center stage over the supple tannins and polished mouthfeel followed by hints of cocoa, dried herbs, and a whisper of smoked stone. This wine finishes long, refined, and textural. Pair it with grilled lamb or beef, smoked brisket, mushroom ragù, aged cheddar or gouda or hearty winter stews.

These free tastings are available between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday and Friday, March 26th and 27th. We look forward to seeing you there.
