Why You Shouldn’t Leave the Cap on Empty Water Bottles in the Heat
Leaving the cap on an empty water bottle—especially in a warm or sunny spot like your car—can create the perfect environment for algae and bacteria to grow and it can happen so fast it's unbelievable
Even if the bottle looks empty, it usually has a few drops of leftover water inside. When sealed with the cap and exposed to heat, that tiny bit of moisture combined with warmth and a lack of airflow becomes a mini greenhouse. If the bottle has been reused, any small contaminants (like backwash, dust, or organic residue) can feed algae or bacterial growth.
What to do instead:
Leave the cap off to let the bottle fully dry out.
Rinse the bottle if you plan to reuse it.
Don’t store used bottles in hot places like cars or sunny windowsills.
This simple habit helps keep your bottles clean and safe—especially if you’re refilling and reusing them!
