Buenos días!

As stated in previous post, beer business is taking the hit due to the current situation (as well as plenty of other industries), so here at Beer Planet we thought it would be nice to propose a list of craft breweries so you'll have some names in mind before ordering a shipment. Today's attention is centered around Brussels but more upcoming posts are being curated for Flanders, Wallonia and the German speaking region. Of course this is not a detailed list, more breweries exist, but we try our best. And now behold, thy mighty collection!

The shop will remain closed until the government considers, but shipping remains open, just throw us an email to [email protected] with your questions and requests and we'll see what can be done.

Moreover, this is a matter that affects us all equally, beer business included. Check out your favourite breweries too because chances are they've set up a way to ship all over the world.

In 2019 the brewery invited 's team over to collaborate and brew a new beer together.

What happens when cool and fresh meets glamorous and captivating? The result is Chike Mademoiselle, a white beer with a sparkling soda texture and discrete jasmine notes that must not be taken lightly because of the slightly elevated (6%) ABV that is concealed under it's taste, as opposed to other regular 3%-4% white beers.

Dubbel? Tripel? Quadrupel?

Don't belgians have enough by having over 1600 different beers to confuse and marvel us? What are those denominations we constantly hear the moment we step foot in this lovely country?

Fear not, we're here to help. There's a lot of folktales around the specific origin of such terms with not much agreement. Some say it's due to being double, triple or quadruple fermentation, some argue they take the name from the amount of malt of the previous type (for example, a triple having three times as much malt).

Despite these and other theories, the widely accepted explanation appeals to the relative strength of the beer in question.

Dubbel beers tend to be between 5.5% and 7.5%. It is a style that originated in the Westmalle abbey, near Antwerp. You can expect these beers to have a dark, coffee color due to the addition of candi sugar in their elaboration, as well as a strongish, toasty finish.

Tripels work in the 7.5% to 9.5% range, flaunting a glowing golden color coming from Pilsner malts. Slightly hoppier than dubbels, they must be served chiller than them too.

The origin of the term Quadrupel doesn't come from Belgium, but the Netherlands. De Koningshoeven trappist abbey baptized one of their beers as "La Trappe Quadrupel" and the name stuck. The real name for the style however is "Belgian Dark Strong Ale". They generally encompass all beers over 9.5% and include a wide spectrum of flavors, being most common the bready and spicy type, although most of them share an amber color.

Great Lambiek!

Who’s tried our 2019 Green Walnut!? We were excited to release this a few weeks back and you’ve blown us away so far with your response. Slightly bitter from the walnuts, but perfectly balanced by the flavors of the Lambic. Cheers!

Come on, not everything in this life is about beer, we also like food right?

Oh wait, this food is also somewhat related to beer... sorry...

But let's be honest, how cool is the idea of a small snack made with processed grains.

The echoes of circular economy reverberated strong and long enough to sprout some ideas
in the belgian beer industry.

After the initial step of boiling the grain, it is discarded and generally thrown away or given to farmers to use it as food for cattle. The idea behind https://www.beerfood.be/
is to take those grains and after some treatment, the resulting product are some yummy crackers to eat in any occasion.

Such a symbol of belgian tradition must not remain unexplained.

What is indeed, a Trappist beer?.

Trappist beers constitute the flagship or belgian beer. The name references a type of beer brewed by a given catholic order of monks denominated as Trappist (or officially known as Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance). They stand as a religious order of cloistered monks that branched from the Cistercians.

But let's not delve into details and stay with the task at hand: talk about beer!.

This very specific denomination is only allowed to fourteen monasteries around the world to describe their beer production, as recognized by the International Trappist Association.

Additionally, the "Authentic Trappist Product" label is assigned to the products of twelve of those breweries.

For a beer to be considered Trappist it must also fulfill three criteria: all products must be made within the immediate surroundings of the abbey, production must be carried out under the supervision of monks or nuns, and finally, profits should be intended for the needs of the monastery and the remainings destined to charity.

The current Trappist beers are: Westmalle, Westvleteren, Chimay, La Trappe, Rochefort, Orval, Achel, Engelszell, Spencer, Zundert, Tre Fontane, Tynt Meadow, Mont des Cats, Cerveza Cardeña.

We are in the aftermath of Christmas Eve & Christmas Day combined, belly is full of fries and our head is a little dizzy, buzzing from all those extra wine or beer glasses we had the day before.

We feel happy though, it is a time for enjoying, sharing, laughing, catching up with old friends and family and indulging in small pleasures like chocolate, sweets and greasy food.

Today in the Beer Planet Universe we wanted to present you an uncommon beer. The Noblesse VSOP from De Dochter Van de Korenaar's brewery.

As opposed to the usual belgian tendency of creating a beer with a high alcohol percentage and hiding it behind a set of aromas, flavours and textures that conceal the beverage's strength, the Noblesse VSOP is a supple blonde matured in genever casks for 8 months, providing an intense alcohol taste with soft spicy and juniper notes, but only bearing 5.5% ABV.

Beerplanetarians!

From the most traditional corners of belgian brewing, a dim light shines upon a group of monks and traditional master brewers while they work their magic. The smell of old cellars hoarding bottles of old gueuzes, lambics and trappist beers, we feel at home...

All of a sudden we're rapidly transported to a small brewery right in the core of Brussels. A group of excited youngsters experiment with new flavors, ingredients and recipes. A new wave of brewers is breaking the limits of the conventional and bringing a new vibe to belgian beer culture.

In "Craft Beer Brewing: The New Wave of Belgian Brewers", Jeroen Bert takes us through the current belgian brewing scene and shows how to brew the most popular ones in the kitchen. Included here are recipes and instructions for an accessible 'brew-in-a-bag' method of making craft beer at home.

The perfect gift for those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and getting their hands dirty in the belgian beer universe!
