Alysa Liu, bursting with joy, wins first U.S. Olympic women’s figure skating gold in 24 years

Isabeau Levito, a long shot for the podium in her Olympic debut, didn’t make much of an impact with her short program. Then in the free skate Thursday, she opened with a rare fall on her first jump. Her 131.96 free skate score dropped her to 12th.

But America’s hopes rested on the shoulders of Liu. She entered the free skate as the only with a realistic shot. And as has been the case since she returned, Liu proved to be America’s best for the biggest moments.

It’s a storybook ending to quite a tale. The phenom who gave it all up. Changed forever by the COVID pandemic, Liu walked away from the sport and its restrictive ways. But she returned, claiming her independence and reclaiming the sport she loves. And with her immense talent came an unbridled joy born of self-discovery. Because it’s better to have loved and lost and then have loved again.

Why Bangladeshis are mocking Tarique Rahman, a 12th pass, as an engineer

After the BNP's sweeping victory in Bangladesh, the Jamaat-e-Islami and its ally, the NCP, alleged poll engineering and began calling Tarique Rahman an "engineer". Bangladeshis have started flooding social media with memes and jokes, claiming Tarique "engineered" the results in the BNP's favour.

Following the BNP's landslide victory in the Bangladesh elections, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance has given the party's chief and now the prime minister, Tarique Rahman, a new moniker, "engineer".

NCP leader, Nasiruddin Patwary, who had labelled BNP heavyweight Mirza Abbas, a "chaandabaaj" (meaning extortionist or illegal fundraiser), was among the first to call Tarique Rahman an "engineer" on Facebook. The NCP, born out of the anti-Sheikh Hasina agitation, is part of the Jamaat-led alliance.

The new members of the Parliament of Bangladesh were sworn in on Tuesday (February 17, 2026) morning by the Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Tarique Rahman will then take oath as the prime minister of the country, the first male to hold the top post in decades.

A “Constitution Reform Commission” is also expected to take oath, according to the Election Commission of Bangladesh. This has surprised many new MPs, especially those from the BNP. According to a version, the entire parliament will work as a “Constitution Reform Commission” for 180 days as an outcome of the referendum that got a majority ‘yes’ vote on February 12, 2026. As a result, all MPs will be sworn in as members of the Commission as well. However, there is evident unease about the process by which the tasks of the Constitution Reform Commission and the parliamentary duties of MPs will unfold.

Top 50 news websites in the US in December: Men’s Journal and US Sun lead growth
Press Gazette's monthly ranking of the top 50 news websites in the US, using Similarweb data.

Men’s lifestyle magazine Men’s Journal recorded the highest year-on-year and month-on-month growth among the top 50 news websites in the US in December.

Visits to the Arena Group site were up 184% year on year and 130% month on month to 19.5 million in December, according to the latest Similarweb data.

Men’s Journal therefore rejoined Press Gazette’s top 50 ranking, having also featured with significant growth in May and June 2025. The site relaunched its quarterly print magazine in July 2025 after a two-year print hiatus.

The US Sun followed on both growth metrics, up 52% year on year and 59% month on month to 34.9 million visits.

Forbes recorded the third highest month-on-month increase in visits, up 15% to 59.3 million. This is despite it seeing the biggest decline year on year, down by almost half (49%).
