A little wine science....

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?

After joining the Penfolds Nuriootpa winery in 1935, Dr Ray Beckwith made major contributions to modern winemaking processes.

Quite notable was his pH research and the understanding of its role in the prevention of wine disorders. This experimentation provided the foundation for Max Schubert’s pioneering work with Grange Hermitage the following year in 1951.

🤓This wine nerd fact is proudly brought to you by the Barossa Vintage Reports 👉 http://www.barossawine.com/barossa-vintages/history/1950s/

Today was a special day as we hand picked HVD Old Vines Chardonnay, the final Chardonnay grapes for the 2021 vintage.
HVD was planted in 1908 and is the oldest Chardonnay vineyard in Australia, and arguably the world.

Now that’s old.

Now that’s old.

How old is 𝗼𝗹𝗱?

We're incredibly proud of our old-vine history - we have the world's oldest, continuously producing Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon vines right here in Barossa (yes, the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 oldest!)

But how long does it take for a vine to be considered 'old'?

To make things easy, we've instituted the Barossa Old Vine Charter, defining vines by their age:

Old vine = 35+ years
Survivor vine = 75+ years
Centenarian vine = 100+ years
Ancestor vine = 125+ years

Well deserved.....

After some tough weeks in North-East Victoria, it's exciting to share some good news... A big congratulations to Warrabilla Wines for winning a Double Gold CWSA Medal at the China Wine and Spirits Awards Best Value 2020.

Warrabilla Wines stood strong against the world's most prominent wines and spirits in China, which is experiencing a wine boom at a scale never seen before!

"We are only a small team with a small production and this win is our second double-gold from an International wine show in the past 12 months. While Rutherglen is noted for producing world class fortifieds, this award serves as a reminder that we are not a one-trick pony - our table wines are also exceptional." - Amy Sutherland Smith

Well done Amy, Andrew and the team!

When you think 'oldest' for vineyards, does your mind turn immediately to Europe?

We can understand why.

But did you know that the world's oldest surviving, continually producing Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon vines are found in our very own Barossa? 🍃

Millions of hectares of vines were wiped out throughout Europe in the 1850s due to one tiny, but mighty bug; phylloxera. Phylloxera attacks the roots of grapevines and worst of all, there is no treatment. The only action is to remove the vines and replant on resistant rootstock, a years-long and costly process (upwards of $60,000 per hectare according to Vinehealth Australia).

South Australia is phylloxera-free, but it is found in other regions in Australia and can be transported easily on clothes, shoes, equipment and vehicles without you even knowing it.

With 75% of our vines, including these precious, ancient vineyards susceptible to the pest, we need YOUR help in protecting them.

The way to help is simple: Please don't walk amongst our vines.

A wine-country selfie looks better when you're looking after the environment, anyway. 🤳

Just think of every glass of old-vine Barossa wine as our little thank you for helping protect our lifeblood. Cheers! 🍷
