This unexpected Mexican aperitif comes from founder and master distiller Hillhamn Salome, the woman behind Xila (“xila” is the Zapotec word for “woman”), produced at Flor de Luna Distillery, one of Mexico’s only female-owned and -operated distilleries. Xila’s mezcal base is flavored with roasted pineapple, smoky ancho chile, cinnamon, black pepper, clove, hibiscus and lavender. Xila’s profile of fruit, flowers, spice and smoke plays particularly well in low-ABV cocktails or simply on the rocks. “While it doesn’t have the bitter intensity of a Campari, it has all of the components of a classic aperitivo and, like Italian amaro, harnesses a specific terroir with [its] own twist on Mexican flavors,” says Patty Dennison, head bartender at Grand Army in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.

The Bloody Mary mix was invented by a bartender working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in the 1920s. Tabasco brand pepper sauce has long been the favorite ingredient to spice up this legendary drink which is still enjoyed by fun-loving people today.

McIlhenny company made Tabasco Bloody Mary Mix with the early recipe in mind. It’s a special blend of extra thick tomato concentrate, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, and the perfect measure of Original Tabasco brand pepper sauce. Directions: Add one part of vodka to 2/3 parts Bloody Mary Mix. Pour over ice and stir well. 🌶️ 🍅 🍹
