✨ Flashback to Our Space Launch ✨
On Saturday, June 5th, 2010, we opened our doors for the very first time, welcoming friends and family to help us celebrate the beginning of Sweets Workshop.

It was the day we officially unveiled our name, launched our website, and introduced our brand to the world — a big step in turning our creative vision into something real.

We also revealed our dedicated exhibition space — designed as a launch pad for emerging artists and makers. From day one, our aim has been to support local and handmade creations — from art and design to jewellery, giftware, and independent publications you don’t often find elsewhere.

Our NEXT STEP was to organise our first exhibition and gather those fab creations from local/ Australian Artists so we can open our doors to the public!

✨ Flashback: June 2010 – The Countdown to Our Space Launch ✨

After many months of hard work, we were finally gearing up to hold a very special event — the official launch of our space! That night was all about unveiling our name, logo, website, and social media presence for the very first time.

The shop was freshly painted, furniture carefully placed, and the space felt full of possibility. As a playful nod to what was to come, we created cardboard ceramics and picture frames with pens attached so the quests could contribute to group drawings throughout the gallery.

Designing the launch poster turned into one of our favorite memories — we layered paper cut-outs, projected them through a lightbox, and photographed the result. The final graphic felt like an echo — perfectly capturing the spirit of a launch.

We even made goody bags for our guests and got ready to welcome family and friends to Sweets Workshop at the Space Launch in June.

✨ Window Signage Flashback ✨When designing our window signage, one of the key things we had to consider was that our building is a local council heritage item. It was important that the signage complemented the character and overall aesthetic of the building.

With that in mind, we chose the typeface Neutraface for our logo, which was then applied to our window and awning signage. We felt this typeface reflected the graceful, stylised, and geometric qualities of the Art Deco period — a style that ties in beautifully with the architecture of the Penault Building in Summer Hill.

The approval process wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but after some persistence, we managed to get everything approved just in time for our opening day.

In the week leading up to our opening, with the windows still covered, we created our very first (mini) window display, a little teaser to give passers-by a taste of the goodies that would soon be in store.

Looking back at the photos now, one thing really stands out: poor Madge, our Madonna Lily, was desperately in need of a good drink of water!

✨ Logo Design Flashback ✨
Our aim was to create a typographic logo that was bold, graphic, modern, engaging, and unmistakably us — something unique that would truly stand out.

We drew inspiration from two contrasting styles: the classic, graceful, and geometric shapes of the Art Deco movement (a perfect complement to our shop’s original Art Deco frontage), paired with the loose, expressive character of modern hand-drawn script.

We started by breaking our name into its two components — Sweets and Workshop — and explored how these contrasting typefaces could work together to reflect both our personality and our purpose.

Then came a happy accident: a line break and hyphen that split Workshop into Work–Shop. This simple twist not only looked great but also cleverly captured the dual nature of our business — a place of work and a shop — in a fun, memorable way.

Our brand colours were pulled directly from our shopfront itself: red from the doors, and black from the original tiles, grounding our visual identity in the space we love.

Applying our new branding across packaging, postcards, and business cards was such a satisfying moment — and even now, all these years later, we still get a kick out of seeing our logo doing its thing in the wild.

✨ Furniture Flashback 2010✨ To make our space truly special, we visited vintage shops far and wide to find beautiful, unique pieces that would bring the gallery to life.

We loved our treasure-hunting trips to places like The Bower, Retro Wombat, and many more. Each outing was a mix of adventure and inspiration.

One memorable find was a set of fantastic vintage letters we discovered in Surry Hills. We immediately knew they’d make perfect little signs for the space.

Then came our iconic 1970s counter — the piece that really made the shop sing. Funny story: when we first spotted it at The Bower, it had already been sold. Still, we left our name, just in case. And lucky us — two days later, we got the call! The counter was ours. It came complete with a pink interior, a laminated top, satin lining, and even a photo from its former life as a lounge room bar. If only it could talk — we imagine it would have tales of dinner parties, cocktail evenings, and fondue nights. We loved that detail so much, we framed the photo and it still hangs on our wall today.

We kept collecting until the shop looked and felt just right — a space that reflected our vision and made people smile the moment they walked in.
