Giro d'Italia: Friuli-Venezia Giulia!

The penultimate stage this evening winds through Italy's northeastern corner, bordering Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. The white wines here are typically fresh and aromatic, while the reds tend to be structured and elegant. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is also famed for Italy's natural wine movement, with producers like Radikon making incredibly complex skin-contact wines with long aging potential.

This area is also the birthplace of one of the worlds most beloved amaros: Amaro Nonino. A richly layered digestif with notes of orange, vanilla and alpine herbs, it is the perfect balance of sweetness, bitterness and spice.

Giro d'Italia: Trentino-Alto Adige!

Italy's northernmost region, with vineyards climbing up the steep slopes of the glacial valleys beneath the Dolomites. The region is shaped by a history that has moved between Austrian and Italian rule, influencing the wine culture from both sides of the border. Its cool climate favours aromatic whites and lighter, elegant reds, with native varieties like Schiava, Lagrein and Teroldego producing wines full of character.

As with most regions in Italy, it is also home to a diverse range of spirits and liqueurs - one of which is Aperitivo Cappelletti, a red bitter made from a Trebbiano wine base. Stylistically it sits between Aperol and Campari, making an excellent spritz when you can't choose between the two 🍹

Giro d'Italia: Lombardy!

The landscape of this region is incredibly diverse, stretching from Alpine slopes to the Po River valley. This variation in terroir gives rise to a huge range of fascinating wine and spirits, with one of the best known examples being the elegant, structured reds from Valtellina. Made from Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo, these wines offer a different expression when compared to their Piedmontese counterparts. Typically lighter, fresher and a little more delicate, they show just how versatile the grape can be!

We also have some excellent gin from the shores of Lake Como from Rivo Distillery, as well as the bartenders classic amaro: Fernet Branca.

Giro d'Italia: Valle d'Aosta!

Italy's smallest region is home to the highest-altitude vineyards in the country. Tucked in to the northwestern corner between France and Switzerland, it is also the smallest winemaking region in terms of size and volume. It's not just about wine here, with a number of excellent alpine spirits being produced in this corner of the world.

For the amaro lovers there's Alpe Amaro, produced with 20 locally foraged botanicals to create a deliciously layered digestif with notes of gentian, star anise and clove. We also have the oak-refined La Valdôtaine Torrette grappa, a more full-bodied style with bright red fruit notes, spice and vanilla. An great introduction to grappa!

Giro d'Italia: Piedmont!

Tonight's route starts and ends in one of Italy's most celebrated wine regions, home to Barolo and Barbaresco. While Nebbiolo may be the regions most recognisable export, Piedmont's wine stretches far beyond famous reds, offering an incredible diversity of styles and varieties.

Native varieties like Cortese, Arneis, Timorasso, Freisa and Barbera (just to name a few) all shine here, but small plantings of varieties like Riesling and Chardonnay also thrive in the region's cooler climate.

This is just a small selection of the wines we carry from Piedmont - let us help you narrow it down!

Giro d'Italia: Tuscany!

Tonight's time-trial stage takes place in the home of Sangiovese: Tuscany. To match the stage, we've lined up some absolutely incredible wines using Italy's most iconic grape.

Chianti may be the regions best-known expression, but if you like something with a little more depth and power, try a Rosso or Brunello di Montalcino. Or, if you really want to indulge, Bolgheri delivers. 🍷

Giro d'Italia: Emilia-Romagna!

Today's stage stays entirely within the borders of the region often regarded as the culinary heart of Italy. Home to Parmigiano Reggiano, Proscuitto di Parma and balsamic vinegar, it's no surprise the wines are perfect with food.

Among the regions most celebrated wines is Lambrusco! It's vibrant, refreshing, and far more serious than many may remember. Emilia-Romagna is also the birthplace of Amaro Montenegro, the perfect bittersweet after dinner drink 🥃

Giro d'Italia: Marche!

The route today continues along the Adriatic Coast from Abruzzo to Marche, where vineyards stretch across rolling hills. Much like its neighbouring regions, Marche produces bright, aromatic whites alongside ripe, generous reds. While the region is famously known for Verdicchio, varieties like Pecorino, Passerina, Sangiovese and Montepulciano also thrive here!

For something a little more unique we also have Distilleria Varnelli's Punch Fantasia, a spiced and sweet liqueur made from a rum base, best served hot 🔥

The Giro d'Italia is well and truly underway, and we thought we'd join the fun by pairing a few regional picks with each stage along the route.

Today's leg runs from Lazio to Abruzzo (via Molise), a stretch known for bright, aromatic and food-friendly wines. We've chosen a few bottles that showcase regional favourites like Trebbiano, Passerina and Montepulciano, plus a rich little dessert wine to finish things off! 😋
