We’ve written an open letter to every Australian who values Australian food.

Healthy Forage 🌸🐝

These hives have recently been treated and relocated alongside nearby canola crops, which can provide an abundance of pollen; an essential source of protein, fats, vitamins and minerals that supports colony growth.

On the last slide, you can see bright yellow pollen packed into several of the honeycomb cells. This stored pollen is known as “bee bread.” Worker bees mix collected pollen, nectar and enzymes before packing it into the comb, where natural fermentation helps preserve this important food source.

Monitoring, treating and rebuilding our hives are some of the difficult but necessary tasks involved in preparing for pollination. Over recent months, ourselves and many other beekeepers, have faced the trying reality of weakened colonies and, in some cases, significant losses.

Varroa mites affect both developing brood and adult bees, weakening their health and increasing the risk of damaging viruses spreading within and between colonies. Their impact has been experienced by beekeepers throughout much of the world for decades.

Commercial beekeeping in Australia is a completely different context and has always been far from easy. A profession dependent on a migratory system has always been posed with seasonal uncertainty, environmental pressures, insecure access to suitable land and rising logistical costs. The added biosecurity challenges posed by varroa have taken a significant toll on viability as an apiary and overall wellbeing.

This industry rests on the shoulders of hardworking families and individuals driven by passion, admiration and a deep responsibility to care for their bees. At a time like this, it is truly important to support one another, share what we learn and continue looking out for those around us.

Royal Es**rt 👑🐝✈️

Pictured here we have our Carniolan Queens; a bit darker in appearance and are calm in temperament. Each wooden cage has 5 nurse bees to help es**rt the queen during transit and the introduction to a new hive - getting a touch of water to supplement their candied sugar diet.

These have been carefully packed for beekeepers in Canada (back in April), preparing for the pollination of various crops such as berries, vegetables and canola.

Our waiting list for local orders are currently open for both Italian and Carniolan queens, with shipping commencing in mid-September. We are currently permitted to ship between QLD, NSW and VIC.

It's that time of the year where we are slowly wrapping up our apiary season, preparing and relocating our hives for Winter and more importantly, where our team (and the bees) will get a much needed break.

At the beginning of the season, we came across our very first labels from when Brenda and Charlie started packing & labelling honey in 2005.

Starting with just a few hives, a handful of headaches, and a lot of hard work, we’re incredibly grateful to still be buzzing 20 years later! 🐝

Frankly, this year has reminded us on how vulnerable the landscape can be as a primary producer.

Within the beekeeping industry, the arrival of the varroa destructor, its on-going resistance to miticides, the rising costs to manage these risks and a forecasted drought, has caused many experienced and well respected figures to walk away from commercial apiculture.

Broader than the primary sector, many local businesses and services are doing it tough across the board. Supporting where you can, whether it's spending the extra dollar or simply by looking out for one another, goes a long way during this time of uncertainty.

As a family business, we are truly grateful for the continued support of customers, mentors, our staff, fellow beekeepers, farmers, suppliers, distributors, and the wider community.

Bee Line'd straight for LA ✈️🐝

Early last month, we had the privilege of attending Natural Products Expo in the States, where more than 70,000 people gathered from across the natural products industry. We were proud to showcase our pure honey and honeycomb range as part of the Australia Pavilion.

In the lead-up to the show, we joined a cohort of New South Wales businesses specialising in natural and organic products, gaining valuable insight into consumer preferences, emerging trends, and opportunities within the market. It was a great chance to connect with like-minded partners who share our values and are looking to grow within the US market.

A big thank you to the team at Investment NSW for their support in preparing and guiding our group for Expo West!
