Roger Sabon Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Prestige 2022 is a seriously good bottle of Southern Rhône red.

Grenache leads the blend, backed by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Vaccarèse and Counoise, giving you loads of ripe red and dark fruit, sweet spice, black olive and a lovely savoury edge. It is rich and concentrated, but there is real finesse here too, with silky tannins and a long, beautifully polished finish.

And the critics certainly agree. The 2022 Prestige has received scores including 94 to 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck, alongside 94 points from James Suckling and W**e Spectator.

This is proper Chateauneuf Du Pape. Big enough to impress, polished enough to drink beautifully, and absolutely worth putting a few years on if you have the patience. Personally, patience around good w**e has never been our strongest quality.

La Vieille Ferme Rouge 2024 is the sort of French red that is easy to have around.

Made by the Perrin family, it is juicy, soft and full of bright red berry fruit, cherry and gentle spice. The tannins are smooth, the freshness is spot on, and there is enough savoury character to keep it interesting without making it hard work.

This is an easy midweek red, perfect with pizza, pasta, roast chicken or a casual dinner with friends. Good French w**e does not always need to be complicated.

Lethbridge Pinot Gris 2025 is a seriously good bottle of Pinot Gris, and the critics agree.

Awarded 96 points by Halliday W**e Companion, it is bright, aromatic and beautifully textured, with pear, white peach, honey and gentle spice, all pulled together by fresh acidity and a long, clean finish.

This is not your thin, forgettable Pinot Gris. There is plenty of flavour here, but it still feels fresh and easy to drink. If you like white w**e with a bit more personality and texture, this is well worth a look.

Two Pikes reds worth making room for.

Pikes The Dogwalk Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is classic Clare Valley Cabernet - blackcurrant, mulberry and red fruits, with a little leafy freshness, cigar box and fine tannins. Medium bodied, polished and very easy to drink now, but with enough structure to spend a few years in the cellar if you can leave it alone.

Then there’s Pikes The Assemblage GSM 2023, a juicy blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. Think cherry, raspberry, plum and blueberry with pepper, herbs, chocolate and soft cocoa like tannins. Generous, smooth and seriously moreish without being heavy.

Two very good reminders that Pikes does a lot more than Riesling.

Redbreast 12 Year Old is one of those whiskies that has earned its reputation the old fashioned way, by simply being very good for a very long time.

Made at Midleton Distillery in County Cork, this classic Single Pot Still Irish Wh***ey is rich, smooth and beautifully balanced, with orchard fruit, dried fruit, warm spice, sherry sweetness and toasted oak.

It has plenty of flavour without being heavy, and that lovely silky texture Redbreast is known for.

If you are looking to explore proper Irish wh***ey, this is a very good place to start. If you already know Redbreast, you probably do not need much convincing.

Two cracking Belgian b**rs from Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie.

Miss T Lucie Strong Blond Ale is an 8% Belgian strong blonde with a twist. It is infused with tea, bringing grapefruit, green tea, fruity Belgian yeast and gentle spice, finishing dry, crisp and surprisingly refreshing. It has also picked up four Gold awards for Best Strong Blond.

Then there is Radio Minerva Classic Triple, a smooth and generous Belgian Tripel with red fruit, soft malt, gentle spice and a lovely creamy texture. At 7% it is a little lighter than many traditional Tripels, but there is still plenty going on. Even better, it has been named World’s Best Tripel three times.

Belgium really does know how to make b**r properly.

Cyril Gautheron Bourgogne Chardonnay 2024 has been very popular, and we can see why.

Made in Burgundy by Chablis based w**emaker Cyril Gautheron, it has lovely white peach, citrus and green apple fruit, with a little floral lift, gentle oak and that crisp mineral freshness you expect from good French Chardonnay.

Fresh and polished without being too lean, and with enough texture to keep things interesting. If you like Chardonnay that is elegant, bright and not buried under oak, this one hits the spot.

Mount Avoca Moates Lane Shiraz 2024 is exactly the sort of red we like finding, plenty of flavour, very easy to drink and you don’t need to spend a fortune to buy it.

Think ripe plum, blackberry and cherry, with a little black pepper, cocoa and soft vanilla oak underneath. It is generous and smooth, with enough savoury character to stop it becoming too big or jammy.

And at $15.99, down from $19.99, there is an awful lot of Shiraz here for the money. Sometimes you really don’t need to overthink it.
