I’m thrilled to welcome Dane Johns to our store this Thursday from 4-6pm, where he’ll personally pour tastings and share stories behind his exceptional Momento Mori and Nikau Farms wines.

For those of you familiar with his work, you will know the energy, purity and liveliness of these handcrafted wines and have the chance to explore and compare different cuvées. And for those of you that haven’t yet had the opportunity - this is simply one not to miss.

Like all our tastings, it’s free and there’s no need to book, just stroll right in and be prepared for bewilderment! 🦋

🌈 New Releases - JAUMA

The 2024 ‘1000 Fires’ is a textural triumph, fruit-forward Chenin Blanc (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc with a gentle lean into the skin contact category. Vibrant & aromatic.

The 2024 ‘Origins’ Arneis is designed for pure enjoyment, carbonically fermented to pump up the fun factor with citrus, green apple and floral notes.

Why are they bottled under crown seal?
James first saw still wines bottled under crown seal in Japan and thought: ‘What a brilliant idea.’ He’d seen too many ‘off’ flavours from corks he had previously used. In contrast, the uptake of oxygen is minimised under crown seal and the steel cap can also be recycled.

Plus, as a sommelier, James never enjoyed the practice of opening a wine under screw cap. He felt there was no energetic exchange — whereas with a crown seal, you still need to actively find something to open the bottle, like with a cork.

Why is there a spritz in the wines?
Carbon dioxide is trapped in wines as a bi-product of fermentation. As wines in the cellar warm up in spring, they begin to de-gas, a bit like a soft drink warming on a table, but not all the gas leaves the wines.

Most wineries will degas their wines by bubbling a non-dissolvable gas through the wines before bottling. This process does not suit natural wines and also strips some of the aromatics.

Hello friends and lovers 💕

Act of Wine will be on reduced trading hours this January while I take a little break to recharge (YAY!).

Between the 8th - 30th Jan the store will be open from 11 - 7pm on Friday and Saturdays and closed from Sunday to Thursday. Please pop in and say hello to my lovely friend, Michael. I’ll be back to normal trading hours from 31st January.

Online orders are still go, however they make take a day or two longer as we are dispatching on Wednesdays and Fridays only. Same day delivery in Melb will still be available on Fridays and Saturdays, usual conditions apply.

Thank you for all your amazing support and for allowing me to take this little break. I can’t wait to see you in February and make this a super duper mega hyper great year ✨

🌱 Alice works with organic grapes from her 3.6 hectares of vineyards, spread across some of the region’s most prestigious lieux-dits, including En Curon, La Mailloche, and Les Nouvelles. Every vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic by Demeter, ensuring the purest approach to winemaking.

🍷 At l’Octavin, there are no additions – just fermented grape juice, natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and absolutely no sulfur. These wines are raw, unfiltered, and unfined, staying true to the land and the vines.

💫 Balestri Valda. Soave for your senses.

Laura and Federico are custodians of a precious patchwork of organically farmed vineyards and olive groves in the heart of Soave. These culminate with an important holding in the tiny cru of Sengialta (‘Sengio’ in local dialect refers to basalt rock). Soils are dark and volcanic, vineyard exposures are southern and at altitudes ranging from 180 - 300m.

They concentrate on low yields from Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave, with winemaking inspired by a respect for their precious terroir and heritage. This place gives the peak expression of native grape Garganega.

Balestri Valda’s wines are alive, textured and pure.

100% Garganega from black basalt soils. Organic. Fermented and aged in stainless steel.

70% old-vine Garganega and 30% reintroduced Trebbiano di Soave. Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel followed by 22 months in 2000 litre old oak on fine lees. A sublime, complex, age-worthy white wine.

“Spicy and floral, opens in the glass with an inviting blend of crushed apples, crystalized ginger and sweet smoke. This is silky and round, nearly opulent in feel, with a core of saline minerals and brisk acids to balance. A salty flourish punctuates the finish, along with hints of lime, creating a savory yet still remarkably fresh impression. These are exciting wines derived from hard work, energy and effort in the estate vineyards and a triumph of restraint and precision in the winemaking process.

They are imbued with a sense of elegance and energy with an ethereal mineral-driven nature. Rested for a minimum 2 years before release.

As always, Dane’s wines are organically farmed, hand harvested, wild ferment, no S02, no additions and no oak. Bottled with premium cork and beeswax seal.
