Writing up my notes from visiting Alessandra at Poggiotondo • Tuscany in June.
Enjoying a calice of Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva 2021.
100% Sangiovese
14%abv
Colour: Dark ruby
Notes of dried apricots and dried fruit.
20% whole bunch to bring more freshness to the wine.
Natural ferment with spontaneous yeast, pressure is put on the grapes in
concrete tulips to compete with the sugar in the grapes from the hot summer due to climate change.
Ancient limestone soils.
Matured in concrete tanks, natural approach, like the farmer 100 years ago.
Only organic farming methods can ensure indigenous yeast to attach and spark spontaneous fermentation.
Soft infusion.
Herbal notes, fresh nose.
Vegan, organic, unfiltered, sediment falls to the bottom of the tanks.
Annual production 4,000 to 5,000 bottles, depending on the season.
There was no production in 2022 due to lack of good fruit.
Will age up to ten years.
My family is watching Indiana Jones in the next room.
