Some of the kgs team at the presentation evening - Jenna coming away with the Best and Fairest award, Immy ‘Deb Reilly Guts and Determination’ award, Gaby ‘Breakers Spirit’ and ‘Tool of the Year’ awards, Clem ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

From playing and coaching footy to pony club, soccer, tennis, surfing, swimming, triathlon and many more community sports and groups, our team not only love to participate as team members or individuals, but also spend time on committees and helping at events.

Using our experience with events, we helped to elevate the Breakers presentation night this year with table arrangements, lighting and photography to ensure it was a special night to celebrate the season 🥂

We take so much inspiration from Mediterranean food - both family recipes passed down from our European migrant heritage and exploring cooking in our own lives.

We love to feature local and seasonal ingredients and cook each meal fresh to order, with simple traditional methods where possible and changing parts of our menu to evolve with changing produce.

On our recent trip to Istanbul and Greece, we wandered fresh markets, studied local flavours and cooking styles, learned about service styles and dining spaces.

We love the slower pace of eating out, where the experience is savoured rather than rushed, and spaces are planned to be enjoyed. Premium, fresh ingredients are prioritised and service is valued.

We can’t wait to share some new seasonal recipes and ideas with you as it warms up in Kilcunda!

This time last year we were madly building, collecting, planning, painting to prepare for opening in September.

Countless hours have been spent planning every single detail of our sitting, dining and working spaces along with our food and drinks menus, crockery, glassware and cutlery, landscaping and entrances.

Each part of the cafe we know today was once a sketch, a frame in the workshop, a debated topic of what would work best - how can we reuse materials we already have? How will we fit all of the equipment / furniture? What will it feel like to walk into as a customer? As a staff member? How will movement flow through the space?

Our beautiful main counters were planned as a central place, the hub of activity and where all other movements stem from. We eventually came up with the idea of using copper and brass offcuts from other jobs to clad the fronts like armour, secured with solid brass dome-head screws. We handmade specific solid hardwood counter tops to fit work spaces and still maintain a feeling of openness through the room. The curved edges to give us maximum space while making it easier to move in and out of the work space behind the counter (no more knocking hips on square edges all shift!).

Just one of many features, each design informing the choices for the next one. We’ve been reminiscing on these photos from a year ago and have plenty more to share!

As you’ve likely seen throughout the media, coffee prices are increasing. We’ve seen multiple increases in our costs in just the past twelve months but can’t keep wearing these costs and maintain a viable business.

Did you know? 15 years ago, a standard coffee was $3.5. In that 15 years, wages have almost doubled, rent & property prices have more than doubled, coffee beans and insurance have increased by more than 4x, milk by more than 2-3x. Cafes across Australia have not kept up with these rises and we entered this year with regular coffee around $5 - only $1.5 more than 15 years ago. Unfortunately we didn’t keep up with prices rising in the industry throughout this period and now we are in an era where coffee shops are losing more money than they are taking. Also, a large coffee is generally double the coffee and double the milk as a small coffee - yet only a small fraction extra cost. At a bar, a double shot of whiskey is double the cost of a single. This is another area of significant loss for coffee businesses.

These reasons are why cafes are closing down across the country. In Australia, we have the best coffee and best trained baristas in the world, our wages are among the highest in the world and our coffee has been around half the price of other countries for a very long time. Logic dictates that it is not viable for businesses to continue like this.

We will continue to offer great coffee in our beautiful seaside location and increase our prices where needed to allow our business to survive and continue to upkeep and improve our equipment, support our wonderful staff with above award wages and entitlements, and trust our customers to support any changes with respect.

As of Monday 4th August, we will be increasing our coffee prices a small amount. In reality, it is not enough to truly cover all of the increases however we are trying to manage the transition in small increments and continue to absorb some of the cost increases ourselves to give our customers more time to adjust.

Thank you for supporting small businesses and together let’s keep hospitality alive and thriving in Australia ☕️

It’s hard to beat a plate of fish and chips while you enjoy the view of the ocean! With the changing seasons we have access to different produce and crave different foods. Our ever - changing menu reflects these changes and having something new to share excites us.

We’ve switched up our freshly chopped garden salad and hand beer battered .bassstraitdirect fish for warm mushy peas and crumbs on the fish 🐠 - still with our homemade tartare and rice bran oil fried 13mm chips. YUM!

Fresh flowers, cake and cocktails for a busy Mothers Day 🍰

📷 captured moments: Russian honey cake, red velvet cake, azaleas from our garden 🌺, espresso martini, French toast, bellini.

As usual, we spent a few late nights baking and preparing all of the details for one of the last big days of the season. We recovered with our typical Sunday routine after big functions / events - a very early night eating leftover cake in bed for dinner 🍯
