Thank you for the home visit recently for my senior lady Zara the Rottweiler who dosent like strangers much ###

Today, Dr Laif visited a first-time mum, this beautiful Highland cow, and her newborn calf after they experienced a challenging start together.

The owner noticed that the calf was not suckling correctly while mum was still providing plenty of attention. Then mum stopped eating, indicating it was time for a vet check. Both received a thorough examination, the calf was showing signs of calving hypoxia (also known as dummy calf syndrome) and the poor mum has a respiratory infection. Both mum and bub received treatment, they're both expected to make a good recovery with the excellent nursing care from the owner.

What is Dummy Calf Syndrome?
Dummy Calf Syndrome occurs when a calf experiences a lack of oxygen during or around the time of birth. This can affect brain function and leave calves appearing weak, disoriented, slow to stand, reluctant to nurse, or lacking their normal suckling reflex. The condition can range from mild to severe, but with prompt care many calves recover very well.

What should you look out for in the first 12 hours?
▪️Difficulty standing or walking
▪️Weakness or lethargy
▪️Poor suckling reflex or inability to nurse
▪️Wandering aimlessly or appearing "lost"
▪️Reduced responsiveness to their surroundings

Early intervention is critical, with adequate colostrum intake and nursing care. If you're worried, please call for advice.
