Region Matters: McLaren Vale vs Barossa Shiraz

Choosing a Shiraz? Where it’s grown can make all the difference.

In this week’s What’s in My Glass?, we’re comparing two much-loved South Australian Shiraz regions, McLaren Vale and Barossa.

Closer to the coast, and cooled by afternoon sea breezes, McLaren Vale Shiraz is usually plush, smooth and generous. Think ripe dark berries, soft spice, mocha and a lovely velvety mouthfeel. It’s a beautiful drink-now style and a brilliant match for BBQs, grilled meats and relaxed weekend gatherings.

Further inland, with a typically warmer climate, Barossa Shiraz is often bold, rich and full-bodied. Think ripe blackberry, dark plum, chocolate, liquorice and warm spice. This is the style to reach for if you love a generous red with power, depth and a long, warming finish.

Here’s the simple way to choose:

Choose McLaren Vale if you prefer smooth, plush and velvety Shiraz.

Choose Barossa if you love bold, rich and powerful reds.

Same grape, but each region brings a different character, flavour and feel to the glass.

Pop in store and explore our Shiraz range for yourself.

Complimentary tastings available.

Same grape, different region, completely different glass.

In this episode, we explore how Heathcote and Coonawarra each bring their own expression to Shiraz, helping you discover which regional style best suits your taste.

If you prefer a bigger, bolder style of Shiraz, there’s a good chance Heathcote will be your go-to.

Known for deep colour, rich dark fruit and savoury spice, Heathcote Shiraz often delivers beautiful structure, firm tannins and a long, powerful finish.

Coonawarra, on the other hand, produces Shiraz wines that are typically more elegant and refined, with earthy, peppery and blackberry characters.

So, Heathcote for structure and spice. Coonawarra for refined elegance and savoury depth.

Same grape, different region, completely different glass.

With a huge range of Shiraz from these regions, come in store, taste them for yourself and find your next favourite.

Complimentary tastings Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, at Dromana and Hastings.

Five stars from Andy M.

"I recently stopped by Wine Lovers Warehouse in Dromana, and it is a absolute gem for anyone looking to stock up.

The first thing that hits you is the massive selection; they have a huge range of varieties and labels to browse through.

I managed to pick up three bottles of Pinot Noir for just $10 a bottle, which is incredible value for the quality.

Beyond the prices, the service was fantastic. The staff were welcoming and helpful, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable.

Whether you are a local or just passing through the Peninsula, this warehouse is well worth the visit for high-quality drops that won't break the bank.

Highlights:
• Excellent value (Great $10 Pinot Noir options)
• Huge variety of stock
• Friendly and professional service "

Pinot Grigio vs Pinot Gris, what’s the difference?

It is one of the most common wine questions we get.

The simple answer? They are made from the same grape, but the name and winemaking style are different.

Pinot Gris is the French name.
Pinot Grigio is the Italian name.

The biggest winemaking style difference comes down to skin contact.

Pinot Gris has a naturally pink-grey skin, so a short period of skin contact during winemaking can add extra texture, colour and depth. This is why Pinot Gris often feels richer, rounder and more textured in the mouth, with flavours like ripe pear, stone fruit, gentle spice and sometimes a soft honeyed note.

Pinot Grigio, on the other hand, is usually made with no skin contact. This creates a wine that is crisp, clear and refreshing, with flavours like green apple, pear, lemon and a clean, zesty finish.

Food pairings:
Pinot Grigio is beautiful with seafood, salads, antipasto and lighter dishes.
Pinot Gris pairs well with roast chicken, creamy pasta, pork and lightly spiced Asian dishes.

Here’s the easy way to remember it:

Choose Pinot Grigio if you want crisp, light and refreshing.

Choose Pinot Gris if you want richer, rounder and more textured.

Same grape. Different name. Different winemaking style.

Come in store and taste our range of divine Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio styles today!
