Region Matters: McLaren Vale vs Barossa Shiraz
Choosing a Shiraz? Where it’s grown can make all the difference.
In this week’s What’s in My Glass?, we’re comparing two much-loved South Australian Shiraz regions, McLaren Vale and Barossa.
Closer to the coast, and cooled by afternoon sea breezes, McLaren Vale Shiraz is usually plush, smooth and generous. Think ripe dark berries, soft spice, mocha and a lovely velvety mouthfeel. It’s a beautiful drink-now style and a brilliant match for BBQs, grilled meats and relaxed weekend gatherings.
Further inland, with a typically warmer climate, Barossa Shiraz is often bold, rich and full-bodied. Think ripe blackberry, dark plum, chocolate, liquorice and warm spice. This is the style to reach for if you love a generous red with power, depth and a long, warming finish.
Here’s the simple way to choose:
Choose McLaren Vale if you prefer smooth, plush and velvety Shiraz.
Choose Barossa if you love bold, rich and powerful reds.
Same grape, but each region brings a different character, flavour and feel to the glass.
