As the owner of a local post office in Cowaramup, I'm concerned about the potential impact of introducing street mail delivery. While it may appear beneficial on the surface, it could actually harm our community and ultimately lead to the closure of our business.
Australia Post has made the decision to close many post offices nationwide due to financial difficulties(https://www.afr.com/.../australia-post-risks-death-spiral...). If street mail delivery is implemented in Cowaramup, it could exacerbate our financial challenges.
Closing our post office would entail the loss of an integral part of our community. Residents would be forced to seek postal, banking, and bill payment services elsewhere, leading to several potential consequences:

Reduced Convenience:
Increased travel time and distance: Accessing postal services would require traveling further, particularly impacting those without reliable transportation or facing mobility issues.
Longer waiting times: With potentially fewer staff and resources at the remaining post office, service wait times may be extended.

Reduced Service Options:
The price of renting a PO box will be tripled for those who want to keep their PO box.
Limited access to PO boxes: Renting a PO box at a distant location could incur additional costs and potential waiting lists.
Restricted banking services: Finding alternative arrangements with a bank or distant post office may offer fewer options or require additional travel.
Inconvenient parcel collection and delivery: Parcel services might become less convenient, potentially involving drop-off points or longer delivery times.

Community Impact:
Loss of jobs: Closure would result in job losses for postal workers, impacting the local economy.
Reduced foot traffic: Businesses near the post office, relying on customer traffic generated by postal visits, could suffer.
Social impact: The post office serves as a social hub in smaller communities, and its closure could lead to a sense of isolation and reduced community interaction, especially for vulnerable residents.

Additional Factors:
Impact on seniors and vulnerable residents: Those heavily reliant on postal services for essential needs might face significant challenges.
