We want to give a very special shout-out to Hugh, who has completed his entire chef apprenticeship here at Elleker Store & Tavern and has now stepped up into the role of Head Chef!

Hugh’s journey with us is something we’re incredibly proud of. We’ve had the privilege of watching him grow from an apprentice learning the ropes into a talented, confident chef who now leads our kitchen.

Completing an apprenticeship takes commitment, patience, hard work and a willingness to learn, and Hugh has put in the time and effort to get where he is today. To see someone begin their journey with us and work their way up to leading the kitchen is something truly special.

Hugh, thank you for your hard work, dedication and everything you bring to our team. We genuinely appreciate the effort you’ve put in over the years, the skills you’ve developed and the role you now play at Elleker Store & Tavern. Having someone who has grown with us take on this responsibility means a lot, and we couldn’t be happier to see you take this next step.

And what better way to celebrate than to give everyone a little taste of what’s to come! 👀🍽️

This isn’t an easy one for us to post as we have to say a final goodbye to a very special part of our work family, Martin. ❤️

Martin had been with Elleker Store since the very beginning, over 30 years ago when the business first opened its doors. There are some people who become woven into the fabric of a business, and over those 30 years, he became so much more than just a worker — he became part of the story of this place.

For more than three decades, Elleker townsite had the privilege of seeing his familiar face, sharing a chat, and having him be part of their everyday lives.

Every Friday night, Martin had his own little tradition. Two pieces of fish with chips and two Guinness b**rs. It was simply Martin, and it wouldn’t have been Friday without him ordering.

It’s hard to imagine our Mondays and Fridays without him now. The empty chair out the front with him drinking his long black, the missing conversations, and Friday nights won’t be the same. It’s strange to think we won’t automatically hear, “Martin’s here” and know it’s time for his usual, two pieces of fish with chips and two Guinness b**rs.

Martin, thank you for all the years, the laughs, the memories and simply for being you. You will be deeply missed by all of us, and your place here will never truly be filled.

From all of us here, thank you for being part of Elleker store for over 30 years.

As our business continues to grow and expand, we’re looking for a motivated and passionate Apprentice Chef to join our kitchen team. With exciting developments on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to start your career with us and be part of our journey.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is eager to learn, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and has a genuine passion for creating great food. You’ll work alongside experienced chefs who are committed to helping you develop your skills and build a successful career in the hospitality industry.

What you’ll be doing:

• Assisting with the preparation and cooking of high-quality meals
• Learning food preparation techniques across a variety of menu items
• Maintaining a clean, organised and hygienic kitchen in line with food safety standards
• Receiving, rotating and storing stock correctly
• Preparing ingredients and setting up stations for service
• Assisting during busy lunch and dinner services while learning effective kitchen operations
• Working towards completing your apprenticeship while gaining valuable hands-on experience
• Working as part of a supportive team to deliver outstanding food and customer experiences

• A positive attitude and willingness to learn

About the Role
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, providing great customer service, and being part of a supportive team. Shifts will include a mix of weekdays, weekends, and nights.

Essential Requirements
• Must be 18 years or older
• Current RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)
• Current Safe Food Handling Certificate
• Availability to work weekdays, weekends, and nights
• Reliable, punctual, and well-presented
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• Ability to work well in a team and independently

Desirable (but not essential)
• Previous experience in hospitality, food service, or retail
• Ability to work in a busy environment
• Flexible availability

Today we say goodbye to someone who has become so much more than part of our team — Ebony has become part of our family.

It’s hard to put into words just how much she has given during her time with us. The early mornings when most people were still asleep, the late evenings when everyone else had gone home, the countless hours spent planning, organising, and making sure everything ran the way it should. So much of what people see and enjoy has Ebony’s care and effort quietly woven into it, often without recognition, and always done with heart.

But what we will miss most isn’t just the work — it’s Ebony herself. The kindness she brings into a room, the way she checks in on people, the laughter, the calm during busy moments, and the genuine care she shows to everyone around her. She has helped shape not only what we do, but who we are as a team. Places are built by people, and Ebony has left a piece of herself here that will always remain.

Watching you move on to the next chapter of your journey fills us with both pride and sadness. We are so proud of you for chasing what’s next, even though it’s hard to imagine this place without you in it every day. Please know that this will always be a place you can come back to — not as a former employee, but as family.

Thank you Ebony for your dedication, your loyalty, and the love you’ve poured into this place and the people in it. We are better for having had you here, and we will carry the memories and moments we’ve shared for a long time to come.
