Northwest Championships Deliver Thrilling Weekend of Racing

The annual Northwest Championships at AshFuels Carnarvon Speedway provided a huge two days of racing action, with four Speedway Sedans Australia divisions battling it out across a packed weekend of competition.

Despite rain bringing a halt to proceedings midway through the second round of racing on Saturday night, the event was far from over. The dedicated track crew worked through the night to restore the racing surface, allowing officials to complete the remainder of Saturday's program with an early start on Sunday afternoon before rolling straight into the scheduled Sunday action.

The SSA Street Stocks division produced plenty of excitement throughout the weekend. Jace Kempton was the standout performer in the preliminary racing and looked set to challenge for victory in the thirty-lap feature race. However, a flat tyre ended his hopes, opening the door for Ben Norman to take control and race to victory. Local driver Damon Lyall improved with every outing across the weekend and charged through to finish second, while Craig Clayton completed the podium in third place.

In the SSA Modified Sedans, Anthony King was simply unstoppable. King dominated the entire weekend, winning every race he contested and comfortably securing the honours ahead of Jarrod Rick and Kim Jolly.

Jamie Graham put together a consistently strong performance in the SSA Production Sedans division to claim the feature victory. Graham's win came ahead of Warren Flavel, who impressively started from the rear of the field throughout the weekend, while Paul Ahearn rounded out the top three.

The Top Star Junior Sedans saw former National Champion Harrison Beres overcome a difficult start to the weekend. After encountering challenges during the preliminary heats, Beres fought his way through the field in the feature race, picking off rivals one by one to secure a well-earned victory. Archie Root finished second, with Koby Rickerby claiming third.

In the New Star Junior Sedans, Cohen Brittain produced one of the finest performances of his young career. Brittain drove brilliantly to secure a memorable feature race victory ahead of Colton Beaver and Kaitlyn Tate.

The Northwest Championships once again delivered outstanding racing with competitors and fans alike enjoying a fantastic weekend of action in Carnarvon.

Brims Wins Inaugural Butcher Classic!

Saturday night at Autobarn Carina International Speedway, Hayden Brims etched his name into the history books, racing to victory in an epic 50-lap feature event to claim the inaugural Allan Butcher Classic.

Zac Brims set the pace in the shootout, but a draw of the number four inversion reshuffled the starting order, handing Hayden Brims pole position for the main event alongside Sean Black while Mitchell Gee and Zac Brims would fill out the second row.

When the green flag dropped, Hayden Brims made the most of his front-row starting position, charging into the lead ahead of Black, Zac Brims and Gee. Zac quickly moved into second on lap two, while Brad Pascoe, who started fifth, followed suit a lap later to take over third position.

Up front, Hayden was immediately placed under pressure from Zac, who repeatedly challenged on the inside line. Each time, however, Hayden was able to withstand the attack and maintain control of the race. Zac switched his focus to the outside groove on lap six, but again Hayden held firm, while Pascoe closed in to make it a three-car battle for the lead.

By lap ten, Hayden had managed to open a small advantage as Zac and Pascoe went wheel-to-wheel in a thrilling fight for second. Behind them, Mitchell Gee held fourth ahead of Sean Black in fifth.
Michael Hally was the next driver on the move, first working his way past Black before taking fourth from Gee on lap seventeen. Despite his progress, the leading trio had already established a sizeable gap over the remainder of the field.

The middle stages of the race ran uninterrupted, with the order at the front largely unchanged. As the laps wound down, however, the pressure began to build once more, with the top three bunching up and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Just when it appeared the race would run green-to-chequer without a stoppage, the caution lights came on with nine laps remaining after David Musch spun and came to rest facing the wrong direction.

Hayden Brims controlled the restart, but Zac continued to search high and low for a way through, while Pascoe and Hally remained within striking distance and ready to capitalise on any mistake.

With five laps remaining, Hayden had once again created a slight buffer, but the battle for second intensified. Zac elected to run the high line while Pascoe attacked from the bottom, and with two laps to go the pair were side-by-side across the stripe. Pascoe carried the momentum forward and completed the pass with one lap remaining, then immediately set his sights on the race leader.

In a thrilling final lap, Pascoe threw everything at Hayden Brims and looked underneath him on the run to the chequered flag, but fell just short. Hayden Brims crossed the line first to secure the Allan Butcher Classic victory by just 0.262 seconds over Pascoe, with Zac Brims completing the podium in third.

Also on the program, Travis Hutchison had a strong night to claim the SSA Street Stock feature from Benjamin Stead and Toby Maloney. Richard Cook won the SSA Production Sedans feature from Will Roser and Chris Annison, while Dennis Shallcross was victorious in the SSA Modified Sedans. Jack Maloney and Linkoln Willis took honours in the SSA Junior Sedan New Star and Top Star feature events respectively.

NW CHAMPS TIME!

The stage is set for the biggest weekend of dirt track action Carnarvon has seen this year, with a solid 70 cars headed north for the Northern Aspect Constructions 2026 Norwest Championships at AshFuels Carnarvon Speedway this weekend.

Across two huge nights of racing, competitors from multiple divisions will battle it out on the clay in what promises to be an action-packed showcase of Speedway in the northwest.

With nominations now officially closed, the fields are locked and loaded for a blockbuster event featuring Street Stocks, Production Sedans, Modified Sedans, and both Top Star and New Star Junior Sedans.

The Street Stock division boasts a strong twelve-car field with names including Damon Lyall, Craig Clayton and Ben Norman all set to tackle the Carnarvon clay.

The future stars of Speedway will also be on full display with a great lineup of Junior Sedans making the trip. The Top Star Juniors feature an impressive fourteen-car field including Brinley Mcgaffin, Cooper Jackson, Harrison Beres, Brax Root, and Archie Root, while the New Star Junior Sedans also bring an exciting six-car lineup.

Production Sedans will have a quality seven-car field led by local Ian Lester, Jamie Graham, Rob Trenaman and the well travelled Wayne Leviston, while the Modified Sedans are shaping up as another highlight category with all drivers ready to put on a show.

With two massive nights of racing ahead, the Northern Aspect Constructions 2026 Norwest Championships are set to deliver spectacular action from start to finish.

BIG DAY OUT AT ELLENBROOK!

It was a big day of Speedway Sedan racing on Sunday at Ellenbrook Speedway, with plenty of action across three classes.

The annual DTN 500 event attracted great fields: twenty-two SSA Street Stocks starting the day. Despite Ethan Cooper taking the initial lead in the fifteen lap final, Ben Norman was able to race his way to the front on lap three in a new (to him) car and race away with the win. Cooper was passed by Ash Con-Goo on lap seven for second, and this would remain the order to the finish.

Twenty-three SSA Production Sedans would start the day, but attrition throughout the racing saw just eleven cars finish the main event. Murray Iwanow took the lead as the feature went green, leading ahead of Matt Noakes and Ryan Mitchell, but Noakes would retire infield with mechanical woes and Mitchell would collect the front straight wall, seeing both out of the event.

Iwanow continued to lead, with Nuno Mendes (in a borrowed car and starting from the rear all day) raced into second, while Dylan Parkes momentarily moved into third before he too succumbed to issues.

Mendes got by Iwanow for the lead on lap nine, while Brad Mitchell moved into the final podium position on lap eleven, and from here the order would remain unchanged, Mendes successful over Iwanow and Mitchell.

Seventeen New Star Junior Sedans would front for action, with Blake Noakes rising to the challenge when it counted, taking the win from Braxton Bussenschutt and Ella Fulcher, while in the Top Stars final it was Jamie Comley taking out a thriller from Jake Huntjens and Mason Whitehead.

The next event at Ellenbrook will be on Sunday the 14th of June.

Black Wins Toowoomba Finale!

In the final show of the Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway season, Sean Black has claimed victory in what was also Round 18 of the McCosker Super Sedan Series Super Sedan Association.

Todd Atkins would start from pole position alongside Black in the thirty-lap final, but Black was able to use the highline to shoot into the lead. Atkins would follow closely behind with Harry Doyle locked into third ahead of Michael Hally and Zac Brims.

The yellows were out with three laps complete as Jackson Brims came to a stop facing the wrong way, bunching the field back up for a restart. Black got away cleanly while Doyle too the opportunity to shoot by Atkins for second, only for the yellow lights to come on once again a lap later.

Black led Doyle and Atkins away, with Zac Brims racing into third shortly after the resumption. The yellows then came out again with Michael Hally coming to a stop on the main straight, seeing the field bunched up once again.

The race looked to finally settle into a rhythm, Black leading Doyle, Brims, Atkins and Steve Jordan, but unfortunately the yellows were out once again, this time for Daniel Taylor who had a heavy hit to the front end of his machine after launching into the turn four wall at a rate of knots.

Contact on the restart saw Sam Hughes facing the wrong way, and with a lap not being complete, it would be a single file restart with twenty remaining. This gave the field the chance it needed to settle back in, Black able to maintain the point over Doyle and Atkins.

The top three order would not change but further back Queensland Champion Brad Pascoe was picking cars off one by one, into fourth with nine laps to go. He then set out after Atkins, who was in turn looking for a way by Doyle lap after lap as Black enjoyed a gap further ahead.

Lapped traffic began to play its part, bringing the top four together and Pascoe took the lowline with three to go to steal the position. He was right on Doyle’s tail but couldn’t quite make any moves stick, Black going on to record a strong victory over Doyle, with Pascoe settling for third.

BUNBURY FINISHES WITH A BANG!

The 2025/26 Bunbury Speedway season came to an end on the weekend, with great fields contesting the Peter Finch Street Stock Summer Cup and Production Sedan Gold Cup.

In the SSA Street Stocks it was WA Champion Mick Hamon who showed the rest of the field the way home, leading every circulation to claim the win. Matt Hammond would hold down second early before retiring infield with an ailing machine, seeing Ash Con-Goo, debuting a new car, racing into second.

Blake Iwanow then arrived on the scene and after a battle with Con-Goo that saw the duo exchange positions multiple times, Iwanow finally claimed the position all for himself on lap eighteen while Con-Goo retired infield.

This moved Peter Herbert into third and the final seven laps would see no changes, Hamon crossing the line nearly six and a half seconds in the non-stop race ahead of Iwanow with Herbert third.

In the SSA Production Sedans Clint Noakes would take control of the twenty-five lap feature race early, racing away ahead of Wayne Leviston who momentarily moved into second place before being passed by Kane McDiarmid and Jamie Higgs.

McDiarmid and Higgs would trade places on lap eight, and a few laps later Noakes would head infield with dramas, seeing Higgs inherit the lead from Barry Rose, who had gotten past McDiarmid at the same time.

The very next lap though McDiarmid would get back by, while two laps later Rose would join the growing numbers on the infield, Higgs now leading McDiarmid and Leviston.

With seven to go McDiarmid would make his way back past Higgs for the lead and from here he raced away, crossing the line over five and a half seconds ahead of Higgs with Leviston third.

Also on the program was the Junior Sedans, with former National Champion Harrison Beres claiming the Top Stars feature win after a dominant day, defeating Ellie Watt and Jesse Hamon, while Sebastian Dimasi was best in the New Stars, crossing the line ahead of Blake Noakes and Mannix Wells.
