Brims Wins Inaugural Butcher Classic!
Saturday night at Autobarn Carina International Speedway, Hayden Brims etched his name into the history books, racing to victory in an epic 50-lap feature event to claim the inaugural Allan Butcher Classic.
Zac Brims set the pace in the shootout, but a draw of the number four inversion reshuffled the starting order, handing Hayden Brims pole position for the main event alongside Sean Black while Mitchell Gee and Zac Brims would fill out the second row.
When the green flag dropped, Hayden Brims made the most of his front-row starting position, charging into the lead ahead of Black, Zac Brims and Gee. Zac quickly moved into second on lap two, while Brad Pascoe, who started fifth, followed suit a lap later to take over third position.
Up front, Hayden was immediately placed under pressure from Zac, who repeatedly challenged on the inside line. Each time, however, Hayden was able to withstand the attack and maintain control of the race. Zac switched his focus to the outside groove on lap six, but again Hayden held firm, while Pascoe closed in to make it a three-car battle for the lead.
By lap ten, Hayden had managed to open a small advantage as Zac and Pascoe went wheel-to-wheel in a thrilling fight for second. Behind them, Mitchell Gee held fourth ahead of Sean Black in fifth.
Michael Hally was the next driver on the move, first working his way past Black before taking fourth from Gee on lap seventeen. Despite his progress, the leading trio had already established a sizeable gap over the remainder of the field.
The middle stages of the race ran uninterrupted, with the order at the front largely unchanged. As the laps wound down, however, the pressure began to build once more, with the top three bunching up and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Just when it appeared the race would run green-to-chequer without a stoppage, the caution lights came on with nine laps remaining after David Musch spun and came to rest facing the wrong direction.
Hayden Brims controlled the restart, but Zac continued to search high and low for a way through, while Pascoe and Hally remained within striking distance and ready to capitalise on any mistake.
With five laps remaining, Hayden had once again created a slight buffer, but the battle for second intensified. Zac elected to run the high line while Pascoe attacked from the bottom, and with two laps to go the pair were side-by-side across the stripe. Pascoe carried the momentum forward and completed the pass with one lap remaining, then immediately set his sights on the race leader.
In a thrilling final lap, Pascoe threw everything at Hayden Brims and looked underneath him on the run to the chequered flag, but fell just short. Hayden Brims crossed the line first to secure the Allan Butcher Classic victory by just 0.262 seconds over Pascoe, with Zac Brims completing the podium in third.
Also on the program, Travis Hutchison had a strong night to claim the SSA Street Stock feature from Benjamin Stead and Toby Maloney. Richard Cook won the SSA Production Sedans feature from Will Roser and Chris Annison, while Dennis Shallcross was victorious in the SSA Modified Sedans. Jack Maloney and Linkoln Willis took honours in the SSA Junior Sedan New Star and Top Star feature events respectively.
