Gilroy Wins Northern Nationals!

In a race that lasted nearly an hour and had plenty of drama from start to finish, it was Mackay racer Wayne Gilroy who outlasted the rest of the field to claim the Northern Nationals win at Cairns Speedway last night.

Gilroy would start from position six in the forty-lap feature race with pole position claimed by Australian Champion Nathan Macdonald, starting alongside Joel Berkley who was able to race into the lead as the green flag flew. Myles Gilroy, the twin brother of Wayne, flew through the pack to be second at the completion of the opening lap ahead of Macdonald.

Lap two saw Gilroy get past Berkley to take the lead, but the yellows came out to negate the move, seeing Berkley back in front for the resumption.

Berkley, Gilroy and Macdonald would put a slight gap between themselves and the rest of the field, which was being led by Mick Shelford, as they continued to go two and three wide in the battle for the lead.

A number of restarts would ensue, and each time Gilroy applied the pressure to Berkley, including one attempt when Gilroy got past Berkley only for another stoppage to occur.

Finally, the group got some green laps strung together and by this time David Head was able to join the front battle, Head going around the outside of Macdonald, Gilroy having a half lose and being straightened by Macdonald who had nowhere to go, and somehow the race continuing with ‘Tangles’ now in third ahead of the National Champion.

Berkley by this point had opened up his own gap as Gilroy and Head continued to go side by side, Macdonald right behind them.

Head ducked into second place with twenty-six laps to go, but as had been the story so far, the yellows came out once again, negating the lap and the move.

The race resumed and it would only go for a few more laps before disaster struck, Myles Gilroy and Head coming together, Head rolling over and Gilroy’s car climbing over the front bonnet of Head and into the fence in a huge crash.

Berkley would now be elevated back into the lead, but Macdonald took the opportunity to race by and take over the point. Over the next few laps he would pull away, until a moment with a lapped car that suddenly slowed in front of him saw a collision occur, Macdonald now out of the race.

Berkley would again inherit the lead on the restart ahead of Shelford and Wayne Gilroy, and this time he pulled away, surviving multiple restarts to hold the point. One of those restarts saw Shelford coming to a stop, leaving Berkley now leading Gilroy and Brett Hardy for the restart with twelve laps and nine cars remaining.

Unfortunately for Berkley, he too would succumb and join the infield parking lot, a flat tyre seeing him retire with six laps remaining.

This handed Gilroy the lead, and he took the opportunity, leading the other remaining five cars to the green flag for the run to the chequers.

Hardy would be the next to withdraw, leaving Gilroy the leader ahead of Brandon Atto, Beau Smithwick, David Manly and Kev Young.

With one to go Gilroy was well clear despite a flat tyre that saw him slowing. Just as Gilroy hit the finish line to take the win, Smithwick dove under Atto for second, Atto spinning to a stop in turn four.

Smithwick continued on to claim second while the incident allowed Kev Young underneath for third before he lost a wheel exiting the final corner, but he still did enough to cross the line in third on just three wheels in what added to a dramatic race.

Manly would round out the four finishers in what was a marathon race.

HOATH LEADS AFTER NIGHT ONE

After the opening night of competition for the Westralia Cup at the IFuels Carnarvon Speedway, it is State Champion Jake Hoath who leads the points.

Hoath, local hope Jace Kempton and defending winner Damon Lyall all won two heat races each, but Hoath's second place in his opening heat race puts him on top after three rounds.

A number of drivers have work to do overnight with many succumbing to mechanical issues, while there was also a few on track incidents resulting in the need for repair.

Also on the program are SSA Junior Sedans with Seth Townsend and Joel Bowman leading the New Star and Top Star points respectively, while Jack McAuley leads the Production Sedans and Sam McAuley survived a large bicycle to hold the points in the Modified Sedans.

Racing will get back underway from 5pm tonight and you can watch it all on Clay-Per-View.

ANOTHER TITLE FOR THORNE!

Continuing his incredible season last night, South Australian Nathan Thorne was able to successfully defend his SSA Street Stock Northern Territory Title at the Northline Speedway defeating Victorian Matt Nelson who finished for the second year in a row, and third placed Sam Brumfield.

Thorne was strong throughout the night and did enough in the heat races to qualify himself from pole position for the thirty five lap final, alongside Nelson, while further back other hopefuls including Jason Duell and Jack Yates were unable to make the call.

As the race went green Thorne would immediately take the lead, and although Nelson would stick the nose under Thorne a number of times over the first lap, he was unable to make a move.

An early caution would see Megan Henderson and Brodie Reid eliminated from the race, but Thorne would maintain his lead, he and Nelson pulling clear of the rest of the field while third placed Brumfield would lead Jake Koivumaki and Lenny Bates in what was developing into a good battle.

Bates grabbed fourth on lap six, then chased down Brumfield and passed him for third on lap eleven, but up front Thorne was pulling away from Nelson as they made their way through lapped traffic.

Thorne was lucky to avoid issues as a lapped car spun in front of him with twenty three laps remaining, bringing out the yellows for the second time in the event.

Bates was put back to fifth on the restart, Thorne leading away Nelson, Brumfield and Koivumaki.

Koivumaki would look to the outside of Brumfield, but the duo made contact coming out of turn four, allowing Bates to get back by for fourth, however by now Thorne had really begun to stretch his legs and was out to a big lead over Nelson.

Another caution with fourteen laps to go bunched the field up once again, Koivumaki back by Bates for fourth as the race resumed but business as usual up the front with Thorne leading Nelson and Brumfield, though the battle for second through to fourth would remain a lot closer than previous.

Bates slowed and went infield with eight to go, while Koivumaki began to apply the pressure on Brumfield and was able to effect the pass with only a few laps remaining, the duo side by side right behind Nelson.

Thorne though was well clear in the distance and would go on to successfully defend his Title, Nelson holding on for second while Brumfield was able to get the best of Koivumaki in the run to the line.
