'Highlife' Vintage Posters are artist Clare Napper's collection of 50 artworks inspired by vintage travel and tourism ads of the first half of the 20th Century. In the same style, they tell the story of the ‘good life’ we lead here in Dubai. For westerners, middle class and those that enjoy the privileges that an ex-pat life in UAE can bring, the collection aims to be tongue-in-cheek advertising o

f the places, services and situations that we all know and love around the city. Clare Napper is an artist and graphic designer who has lived in Dubai for 13 years. After 14 years working in branding and advertising she quit to set up her own pop-art studio and pursue independent design projects.

“Dubai offers a lifestyle that must be one of the best in the world, and as a designer I was keen to find a creative outlet for my time lording it up here! I wanted to create some ‘real’ souvenirs with a deeper insight into life out here that ex-pats can take away as fond memories; after all, many of us won’t be here forever.”

🍫Back in 2008 my housemate called the shop downstairs for a single chocolate bar to be delivered – and that became the seed for this piece.�Back then, home delivery felt like a ridiculous luxury, one of the few places in the world that this was possible. Now home delivery is a modern day standard - who's spoilt now?⁠

When I asked the shopkeeper why they would entertain it, he said, “Today is one item, tomorrow a full basket.”�This poster has become it's own vintage moment in time in Dubai's fast moving story. ⁠

🍹🤑Bullfrogs, green tongues and Rock Bottom chaos! Made in memory of my younger days when I first arrived here.

This was the first limit edition Highlife poster I designed (mainly because it was an illegal spin on the Rolling Stones logo) Only a few left floating around!

Just while I’m here, who remembers these other dive bars from back in the day?
1. Rock Bottom in Regent Palace Hotel in Bur Dubai - to this day I don’t remember exactly where it was, we always magically ended up in there..
2. Waxy O’Connors at Ascot Hotel in Bur Dubai - great nights here with its boozy slushy machines ever rolling and ni****ne stained everything
3. Aussie Legends at Rydges on Al Diyafa in Satwa
4. Boston Bar at Jumeirah Rotana on Al Diyafa in Satwa
5. Red Lion at Metropolitan. A step up from Rattle Snake.
6. Rattle Snake at Metropolitan (scary ho**er bar, last resort)
