Ethiopia has a Hydropower Project at the value of USD 2,705,000,000 being done by the Ethiopian Electric Power. Mendaia is a 2,000MW hydro power project that is planned on Abay (Nile) river in Ethiopia.

The project is currently in announced stage and will be developed in single phase. The construction is likely to commence in 2027 and is expected to enter commercial operation in 2031.

The gross head and net head of the project will be 117.4m and 109.8m respectively. The project is expected to generate 12,100 GWh of electricity while project cost is expected to be around $2.7bn.

This are facts that remain valid for a variety of reasons, whether we like them or not.

1. Of all people living with HIV in the world more than 78% are in Africa; Also out of the 34 million HIV-positive infected people in Africa, 69% live in sub-Saharan Africa.

2.Measles, Malaria and Diarrhea (MMD) are three of the biggest killers of children in Africa and yet all are preventable or can be treated with access to simple, affordable interventions.

3.Africa has 10% of the world’s oil reserves, 40% of its gold, 80-90% of its chromium and platinum group metals. In addition, Africa has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land – Yet Africa is still the most poorest continent.

4.The whole of Africa uses less than 3% of the world’s energy, despite having 15% of the world’s population. (The United States alone uses about 19%)
Because of the poor power supply, about 30% of health centres and over a third of primary schools in Africa have to function with no electricity at all.

5.Every year more than 170,000 migrants try to go Europe through Libya by boat, And of the 170,000 almost ,000 people will die while trying to make this crossing.
