🥃 Glasgow 2017/2022, 4yo, PX Sherry Hogshead, 57.2%. A youthful and energetic Lowland whisky bursting with raisins, dark chocolate, figs and warming spices. A great example of how active PX sherry maturation can transform young spirit.

From Okowita to Vodka

The Polish-Lithuanian Origins of the World’s Most Famous Spirit

Few spirits are as globally recognized as vodka. From Warsaw to New York, from Stockholm to Tokyo, vodka has become an international drink associated with purity, craftsmanship, and tradition. Yet despite its worldwide fame, the true origins of vodka remain widely misunderstood.

For decades, popular culture has repeated the myth that vodka was invented in Russia. In reality, the roots of vodka reach much deeper into the history of Central and Eastern Europe, particularly the lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most influential states in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Long before vodka became a symbol of Russia, the people of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were already producing and refining distilled grain spirits known as okowita.

🌺82nd Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino

Today we remember one of the most important and symbolic battles of the Allied campaign in Europe, the Battle of Monte Cassino.

After months of brutal fighting, it was the Polish II Corps under General Władysław Anders that finally captured the monastery hill on 18 May 1944, opening the road to Rome and breaking one of the strongest German defensive lines in Italy. The victory at Monte Cassino became a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and determination of Polish soldiers fighting far from their homeland for the freedom of Europe.

Among those soldiers was one of the most extraordinary wartime companions in history, Corporal Wojtek the Bear.

Originally adopted by Polish troops in the Middle East, Wojtek became an official member of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, Wojtek famously helped carry crates of artillery shells alongside soldiers, becoming a symbol of morale, resilience, and brotherhood within the unit. His story would later become legendary around the world.

Our Corporal Wojtek release was created to honour not only an incredible bear, but also the men of the Polish II Corps and the legacy they left behind at Monte Cassino 82 years ago.
