Soon after, the name was shortened to ‘uisce’ (meaning ‘water’), and the pronunciation gradually shifted from ‘ish-key’ to ‘whiskey.’ Since then, the pronunciation has stayed the same.

That means less beer and more nonalcoholic drinks, cannabis beverages, and canned cocktails, as well as events where individuals would be comfortable in a taproom by themselves, like silent book clubs.

A Laporte woman is among those capitalizing on the growing number who prefer low- or no-alcohol drink options.

Mikaela Fisher opened Mrs. Sippi, an exclusively nonalcoholic bottle shop in Laporte.

Fisher said she hopes to expand this summer with more staff and to get involved with community events. Non-alcoholic (NA) beer is growing rapidly in appeal. So, what’s the difference between “non-alcoholic” and “alcohol-free” labels?
✔️ Non-alcoholic brews must have less than 0.5 percent ABV.
✔️ The alcohol-free label carries even stricter requirements. The beer must contain 0.0 percent alcohol, and to verify a brand’s claim, each producer must send a liquid sample to the TTB for proper testing to ensure the beverage is truly zero proof.
