Find this Château d'Yquem 1940 at Arden Fine Wines.

Very little wine was produced at Château d’Yquem in 1940 (for obvious reasons).

The harvesting in late September and early October brought in excellent, highly-concentrated, botrytised grapes.

Subsequently there was relentless rain that forced the winemaking to come to a premature halt.

Nonetheless, those grapes that were picked and carefully sorted made an elegant d’Yquem.

There was a wartime shortage of chromium, which gives glass a deeper green colour.

Chromium was used – with iron – to make stainless steel rather than wine bottles.

Therefore wartime bottles like this Château d'Yquem 1940 are a pale green-blue.

“The Vineyard” – wine label art by Valentino Monticello.

It used wine labels from Château Haut-Brion, Château Lafite Rothschild, Giacomo Conterno, Petrus, Il Molino di Grace, Opus One Winery, Château Cheval Blanc, and Château Latour, among others.

Said Valentino: “All of my pictures are composed of shapes carefully cut from wine labels: the people, the flowers, even the lines, are carefully cut from different wine labels. There is no drawing or painting involved at all.”

Here's 1966 Château Mouton Rothschild at Arden Fine Wines.

The 1966 vintage in Bordeaux, including Pauillac where Château Mouton Rothschild is located, was very good.

Overall, the best examples – like this Mouton – were very tannic at first but have aged well and smoothened over the years (like many other 60-year olds, I suppose…)

The 1966 Mouton Rothschild label was by Pierre Alechinsky, born in 1927 and who will (we hope) celebrate his 99th birthday in October 2026.

His “Ram-Drinker” shows the Rothschild “mouton” (ram) enjoying a glass of wine.

Find this Dom Pérignon 1966 at Arden Fine Wines.

This was the 16th release of Dom Pérignon since the inaugural 1929.

Its birth was overseen by René Philipponnat, DP’s “chef de cave” 1949–76.

Almost all of the vintages he produced were outstanding, with 1952, 1953, 1955, 1961, 1962, 1964, and – of course – 1966 the best of his best.

Please note that Champagne this old doesn't always retain any bubbles…!

Château d'Yquem 1942 at Arden Fine Wines.

A rare wartime vintage of the world’s most prestigious sweet wine.

At 80+-years old, it has turned to a deep, dark amber.

The palate remains highly viscous and mouth-coating, with the sweetness balanced by bright acidity.

The 1942 d’Yquem vintage was featured in the documentary series “Cellar Stories” on SOMM TV, in which experts (sic) sought to authenticate a potentially counterfeit bottle found in Los Angeles…

You can find this 1966 Château Latour at Arden Fine Wines.

This is arguably the best red wine of 1966.

Its colour remains opaque.

Overall, it is a solid, robust, well-aged claret, with plenty of substance and a long, savoury finish.

Perfect for a 60th-birthday dinner 🍷.

Find this Château d'Yquem 1935 at Arden Fine Wines.

This Yquem comes from a rain-sodden Bordeaux vintage, in which the hard-working grape pickers were often drenched.

Overall, it is a lighter example of d’Yquem, with a smooth texture and a good balance of sweetness and acidity.

“Gritti Palace” by the late Valentino Monticello, made entirely from wine labels.

What is now the Gritti Palace Hotel in Venice was the residence of Doge Andrea Gritti in the 16th century.

It is located on the north side of Venice's Grand Canal, opposite the Church of the Salute, between the Campo del Traghetto and the Rio de l'Alboro in the Sestieri of San Marco.

As W. Somerset Maugham observed in 1960: “There are few things in life more pleasant than to sit on the terrace of the Gritti when the sun about to set bathes in lovely colour the Salute, which almost faces you.”

Valentino used labels from Petrus, Il Molino di Grace, Lynch-Bages, Latour, and others to create this beautiful artwork.

Château Cheval Blanc 1955 at Arden Fine Wines .

The 1955 Bordeaux vintage produced a large amount of wines with a rich, full-bodied style.

At Cheval Blanc, they produced 42 hectolitres per hectare, which equates to about 235,000 bottles.

As a point of comparison, in 1947 the yield was 37.4 hl/ha, or about 209,000 bottles.

In 2022, it was 28.9 hl/ha, or nearly 162,000 bottles.

Not much new oak around in the 1950s – this wine was aged in 6-year-old barrels.

The concentration and finesse of Cheval Blanc 1955 shows that high yields do not necessarily lead to a loss in quality.
