After the archetypal 1988 and the discreetly plush 1989, the 1990 Château Margaux caused great excitement – especially on the American side of the Atlantic.

Château Margaux 1990 epitomises American jazzy elegance rather than subdued English (or should that be French?) elegance.

Unlike the hot weather experienced in France and Spain (and Britain) in 1976, Italy had a wet year and the grapes in Tuscany were soaked.

However, Sassicaia 1976 is a success for the vintage – a lighter and less tannic example of Sassicaia.

Should we expect books or magazines or mirrors or anything that involves paper or glass to look brand-new when it is, say, 50 years old?

Older bottles like this often show signs of age, such as slightly damaged capsules and/or scuffed, damp-stained or (part-) missing labels .

This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the wine is faulty or damaged, or that the bottle is a counterfeit or fake.

The 1988 growing season in Champagne featured a mild winter and early flowering.

Consequently, the summer brought alternating heavy rain and high heat.

This contrast, in turn, produced grapes with excellent acidity and structure, which is why the Dom Pérignon 1988 is known for its remarkable ageing potential.

As a result, it now displays a deep golden colour with fine, persistent bubbles.

Furthermore, the sophisticated nose presents floral notes, citrus fruits, and mature scents of brioche, toasted almonds, and honey.

In addition, on the palate, it offers a rich and full-bodied experience with a creamy mouthfeel.

Moreover, the flavours encompass dried stone fruits like peach and pear, balanced by a crisp mineral edge.

Ultimately, the bubbles have softened over the years, giving this 1988 champagne a lovely creamy character.

The 1988 Château Lafite Rothschild got forgotten in the scramble for 1989 and 1990.

Just as well, since the wine needed time to come out of its tannic shell.

Now it looks more balanced and elegant than the 1986, and the tannins are finer.

It lacks the concentration and power of 1989 but drinks better now.

The 2019 Chateau Musar was released in April 2026.

There was record rainfall in December 2018 and January and February 2019 in the Bekaa Valley, where Musar’s vineyards are.

After several years of drought however, this was a welcome relief.

Interestingly, Musar finds that fermentation seems to be enhanced in rainy years, with the natural yeast fermentation and malolactic fermentation of the 2019 wine completed by early November.

The wine was blended in summer 2021, bottled in July and August 2022, and then aged for another four years.

And here it is…

The 1996 Chateau Musar is a lighter example of this great red wine.

Like 1995, it was a smaller than usual grape crop.

However, in 1995 some batches of the wine did not finish their fermentation, so they were racked (pumped into different vats) but not sulphured.

It took some batches one year to ferment!

Therefore in 1996 a little bit of sulphur was used during racking to protect the wine from oxidation.
