Schist happens on 60th birthdays…

The soil in which the Douro Valley vines are planted is made up of schist – a slate-like rock with good water-retention.

Taylor’s extensive cask-aged reserves feature a collection of very rare and valuable Single Harvest Ports, like this 1966.

Unlike Vintage Ports, which age in bottles for many years (or as long as you like), Single Harvest Ports come from a single year and age in seasoned oak casks.

Christian Moueix, whose family has been involved with Petrus since 1943, practised crop-thinning (removing some grape clusters from the vine before harvest) as early as 1973.

In a year like 1982, when some other top Bordeaux estates merely contemplated the possibility and made as much w**e as they could, this undoubtedly contributed to the quality of Petrus in such an abundant vintage.

Château Beychevelle’s name is derived from the Gascon “Bécha Véla”, meaning “baisse voile” (“low sail”).

Apparently, the boats that passed in front of the Château had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance to Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, Grand Admiral of France and Duke of Épernon, who owned the estate in the 16th century.

The w**e’s label shows a galley boat with its sail lowered.

“ Bouquet of Flowers” by my late friend Valentino Monticello is made entirely from w**e labels, including 1984 Châ“Bouquet of Flowers” by my late friend Valentino Monticello is made entirely from w**e labels, including 1984 Châ Latour.

Said Valentino: “All of my pictures are composed of shapes carefully cut from w**e labels: the people, the flowers, even the lines, are carefully cut from different w**e labels. There is no drawing or painting involved at all.”

Should we expect books or magazines or mirrors or anything that involves paper or glass to look brand-new when it is, say, 57 years old?

Older bottles like this often show signs of age, such as slightly damaged capsules and/or scuffed, damp-stained or (part-) missing labels.

The difference in label conditions and ullages is explained by different storage conditions for each of the bottles.

This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the w**e is faulty or damaged, or that the bottle is a counterfeit or fake.

Although the 1978 vintage was modest overall, the conditions in Pauillac were excellent, resulting in a classic and age-worthy w**e by Lafite.

“Liquid Asset” ranked Lafite 1978 first in a tasting:

“While the group did not judge a single w**e to be of significantly highest quality, four of the w**es, in fact, received essentially the highest score.

Specifically, these were Lafite, Leoville, Haut-Brion, and Petrus.

However, Parker’s books do not assign high points to these w**es; therefore, those expecting the fruit-bomb, bombastic w**es will be disappointed.”

The 1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux has remarkable energy and structure, even decades after bottling.

Well-stored bottles like these at Fine Wines still offer a remarkable experience.

Overall, this is now a fully mature w**e that shows complex, aged aromas and flavours more than clearcut fruits.

This Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1976 was shaped by a famously hot, dry summer that resulted in deeply concentrated, savoury w**es, with firmer tannins compared to cooler years.

Mature bottles like this exhibit a complex, savoury bouquet of rose, red currant, truffle, and baking spices.

For the vintage this w**e has lasted very well.

Although it will not improve, it should hold on for another few years before gently fading.

In total, DRC crafted 25,384 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1976.
