Aloha, everyone! Today, June 11, 2024, we celebrate a very special day in Hawaiian history – King Kamehameha Day.
On this day, we honor the legacy of King Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great.
Did you know that King Kamehameha Day was first proclaimed by King Kamehameha V on December 22, 1871?
Originally, the people of Hawai’i wanted to celebrate King Kamehameha V’s birthday on December 11.
However, being the humble chief that he was, he chose to honor his grandfather instead and moved the holiday to June 11, as far away from his own birthday as possible.
The very first King Kamehameha Day was celebrated on June 11, 1872, and it has been a cherished tradition ever since.
As we commemorate this important day, let us reflect on the values that King Kamehameha I embodied – unity, strength, and a profound love for his people and land.
May his legacy continue to inspire us to work together, honor our history, and build a brighter future for Hawai’i.
Happy King Kamehameha Day, Hawai’i! Let us honor the past, embrace the present, and look forward to a future filled with aloha.
